OK, they're Mp3 VBR V0 encoded with LAME3.97 . Am I doing something wrong? I don't see a CBR vs. VBR option in the downloader...

Edit: Now that I read your post better, I'm fairly sure you meant that it's pre-encoded like that from Amazon. Sorry for the stupid questions.

They're VBR, which is normal for Amazon. There's no option for CBR. Here's Amazon's Media Formats info page:
