This is my first post so please be gentle :p

I am about to buy a gift for a friend who listens to a lot of http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F3FAFzLKgUQ&list=FLA8qURgNEpssbfT4OGiN97Q&index=12 <-- that kind of music, along with lots of rock like Rammstein, Drive By Truckers, Pink Floyd and older stuff like Lee Michaels e.t.c.

Would I better off buying the AKG K550's, the Beyer DT 990's or the DT 770's?

They will be used at home through an amplifier.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions, and hello to all

If they want to seal out outside noise, I recommend the K550- these are easier to drive and more compact/ transportable than the DT770. Don't expect exagerated bass from the K550- it's accurate and natural.

If they like a brighter sound that is airy and don't mind hearing everything around them (and others hearing what they are playing), then maybe the DT990. I personally found the DT990 much too bright but many love it here.

That said, you may want to wait for the AKG K267, they seam appealing if they have the quality sound of the K550.

Thanks for the prompt reply. I was lead to believe that the 990/770's were very bass oriented, from your comments it sounds like that is not the case?

Also I am pretty sure he doesn't want overly bloated bass, just as long as it reaches deep enough and he can hear it. Would the K550's manage that? The Tiestos are ( £274 ) twice as much as I want to spend unfortunately, I can buy all the ones I listed locally for £140 :D

To make sure your friend won't have any fitting issues with the K550, make sure he's doesn't have a small head and/or wears glasses. These cans really need to seal well to deliver their optimal sound

Will do thanks.

Assuming his head is big enough, and he gets a good seal ( he doesn't wear glasses ) does the bass on the 550's have some impact or would you say they were bass shy, even if just a little?

They do have good bass, I should have clarified, especially the 990 but it is not quite as deep or clean as the K550 but it's by no means bad. They I only say this because I many times go from my DT770 to the K550 and it's readily apparent. Both are great.

And yes, seal is pretty important with the K550- tiny heads should look elsewhere.
