What? That cable is such a disappointment! I recently bought a pair of K550's and I thought they sounded incredible. I ended up taking them back to BB before the return policy expired because I found out about the shorter cable and the nice silver design. The cable on the 551 is an absolute joke. Not to mention, I thought these things came with a pouch. Basically these cost an extra $80 above the BB price for the K550, and all you're really getting is a cable with buttons on it. Major turn off.

I honestly see the K551 as a downgrade. The looks are probably the only redeeming feature, although seeing them side by side, I actually prefer classy design of the K550.

That's settled it for me too. Getting the K550's.
This new cable malarky on the K551's is simply disappointing, plus the pouch is M.I.A .....

The K 550 looks much classier. Shiny silver is a stale de facto look for electronics.

If the lower mids or the fit is better in anyway, then my K550s are going up for sale!.
 
The cheap looking cable isn't too big of a deal for me, but i do appreciate it being shorter.

Need to know how they sound compared to K 550!?
 
The cable is indeed a huge disappointment for that money. Not detachable and no 1/4" adapter? Seems like a downgrade from K 550, unless the sound hasn´t improved.

I gave it a little bit of ear time last night on an amp.  Initial impressions are that the sonic magic I like about the K550 is not on the K551.  I have not compared it directly with the K550 yet.  My K550 is well broken in so I am going to run the K551 for another day before I compare the two.
 
I can see why AKG made this version, but the jack won't fit my iPhone without removing my Apple Bumper Case that mean I will never use the K551 on my iPhone.  It's boarderline stupid to make the jack so big.

the look of the silver k551 is too familiar....zzz
much prefer the darrrrrkerlook of the 550.
 
the packaging of AKG is minimalistic....
if only the effort saved goes into more tot for headfi practicalities...
removable cable..properplug....suitable length...pouchhhhhhh ...oooooooooh.
