The only standard I have to judge music quality right now is through $10 Sony earbuds I got like two years ago, and I REALLY want to hear music as beautifully as most of you say you do. And, reading reviews and everything, the D5000 seems to be what I'm looking for, good for dubstep/vocals/acoustic.

Though, I know the difference in sound from Sony earbuds to the D5000's would be HUGE, but some people say not to spend so much on your first pair of headphones, and to first become seasoned with ''your'' type of sound. The thing is, I see it as a waste of money to spend time experimenting first, when if the D5000 doesn't work out, I could sell/return it.

I'm hoping for some opinions on if you should really go all-out of your first hi-fi HF/set-up?

People say that so you can Better understand what you own. Though on the flipside, it is pretty nice to not have to mess around and just go straight for the gold. I spent years with the D2000's and it would have been nice to just have the D5000's and be over it.

I see no problem with starting off with something fairly high end. The D5000s are a fantastic choice. You'll be absolutely blown away when upgrading from crappy earbuds.

Not to mention he won't need a fancy amp with them, so it is a realistic option to dive into. Something like the HD650 borderlines on hobbiest because of the amping.
