LCD-2 sounds a bit dark to me, so personally I wouldn't classify it as 'all-rounder'. But it sounds addictive though

It seems like detailed and forgiving are mutually exclusive. Perhaps the T1 is the answer- but David's description that these headphones can have hot treble in some set-ups- couldn't this translate to hot treble with some recordings? If there's one thing the HE400's taught me, it's if drums aren't recorded well, a detailed headphone will playback these drums in an irritating fashion. Maybe it's just the HE400's that are this way. Anyways, going back to the original point- if a recording has flaws, be it minor imperfections- is it the nature of a detailed summit-fi headphone to expose those flaws- in such a way that it detracts from enjoying the recording? Sorry for the rambling, just trying to figure out what end game cans will translate to for me.

It all eventually comes down to preference and yes, I think cans like LCD-2 would help to muffle flaws from bad recordings, making everything more enjoyable. On the other hand, there are people who actually preferred bright cans against dark/warm cans.
 
 
Obviously the best solution is to get at least one of each bright and dark pair of cans

Stax  - Detailed, yet not fatiguing.

In general 'stats tend to be that way. My ESP950 is still my favorite headphone overall after owning the T5p and PS1000, and auditioning plenty of other flagships long-term. As far as dynamic drivers go, I think the can that comes closest to that sound is the T1.

In your case I would be going for the HE-500 or LCD2. The HE-500 has a more forgiving and less strident treble with similar to better detail and imaging. Fuller midrange and a slightly laid back sound. The LCD2 is basically what you should upgrade to if you are enamored with the HD650 fully, laid back similar overall balance and far higher detail, speed, clarity and imaging. 
 
The Beyer T1 has treble that can be tizzy and unwieldly like the HE-400 - on poorer recordings. As much as you may want to argue the T1 treble not being a bit abrasive on great audiophile standard recordings it can sound over pronounced on Rock recordings with hot cymbals. If you listen to an old recording like UFO's albums, Scorpions or similar it can sound harsh. The LCD2 and HE-500 don't show up these kind of recordings for example.

Most estats are not fatiguing in the treble, yet very very detailed. Some models like the lambda sigs might seem fatiguing in the upper mids as they are pretty pronounced. Can be to me at least. Still, they don't really slaughter bad recordings either, they just don't sound as good with said recordings IME.
But stats are also different from model to model ofc.

Thanks for the valuable insights, very helpful. Right now leaning towards the LCD-2, seems like this is my best option to upgrade to. Hopefully someday I'll go the Stax route. Considering a separate amp would need to be purchased (except with the ESP950) it'll take some time to save up. Only a few weeks away from the possibility of LCD-2. Thanks again.

Have you considered the LCD-X?  Very easy to drive - they sound good to me with only a computer + dragonfly DAC.
