I posted a quick impression of the two headphones in the Alpha Dogs thread. I actually think the Alpha Dogs dethrone the HE500 as the best high end headphone available for the price.

David, if you have the occasion to try the HP50 (Tyll's current favorite closed-back headphones), don't hesitate to share your impressions. ^_^

David, were you referring to the 'bass heavy', or the 'bass light' R10 in comparing it to the Alpha Dog?

That's a good question. I think it may be a little light on impact.  The TH900 seem to fit the bill with rock more based on my limited listening time.

Possibly, though I can't yet make that assessment without hearing them back to back in a quiet environment.  At non-quiet meets, open back headphones fare terribly for me.

I can't yet define which is better between the Alpha Dog or HE-500.  It was only for a few minutes that I had the pleasure of listening as there was a line waiting behind me. Also, the iPhone was my source and I wasn't on an amp with which I had any familiarity.  Add into the mix that this meet was especially noisy.  I can't judge the nuances of the Alpha Dog except to say that it was clearly a genuinely good headphone for the asking price.  The sound signature seemed to me to be in line with the bass light R10.  I didn't get to compare it back to back.  If I were to guess from memory, the R10 outclasses it, but the signatures were noticeably alike based on memory.  The most obvious benefit of this is (beyond price) the headphone is serviceable where as the R10 is not.

I didn't hear Frank's WA5 at the meet.  Is it different from the standard WA5?  I have heard Frank's rig once before, though I don't remember if it was the WA5 specifically.  It's been a while.  I don't feel I've heard enough amps to really have a top 10 that's fair.  Also, a lot of DIY amps are competitive (and sometimes better) than what's on the market.  Ari's (Nikongod) amp is competitive with most amps that I've heard.
 
Trick of the Tail and Wind & Wuthering are still classic genesis to me.  On a side note, I think I'm seeing the Musical Box perform SEBTP in a week or two.  Excited for that! I think Lamb and SEBTP are their best albums

to be honest, I've finished quite a few reviews but I have been having difficulty coding the HTML file.  I have another hifiman on the way too.  I need to figure out an easier way to move things around.  The way I initially laid it out has not been so conducive to change.

In my experience, adding too much stuff into a single.post makes this site's engine stutter and freeze.
Now I see why people always reserve there or more posts at the very start.of the review...
The review in my sig... I'll have to make another post at the end of ths post forum to expand it.
It's already a miracle that I've managed to add so much stuff into a single post.. So much repeated submitting again and again... Sigh xD

You might be on to something... I just checked the Mr. Speakers site and the Alpha Dogs are sold out!   

I'm currently aiming to get myself a second pair of cans, candidates are HD650/HD600, HE-400, DT880, RS2i and I guess according to your review here I should get the HD650..
 
 
Though I have to admit I am quite surprised by how low the RS2i stands compared to the other cans there.

I still can't believe someone at the university I'm going to was using a Grado RS-1 while walking around campus. o.0

I'd go for the HD600. Cheaper and more linear frequency response.

I'm not. Grado headphones seem to have come down in reputation a lot over the years and from listening tests, they are really unimpressive (and uncomfortable) to me. RS2i sounded really boring to me during a test, was not worth the asking price. GS1000 was even less involving. The few Hifi stores around me feature them and I've done multiple comparisons on various set-ups.
 
On a positive note, SR-80 is still the best open back headphone you can get for $100. The rest of the line doesn't seem to scale up particularly well (PS500 sounded like the SR-80 with added bass). And again, none of them are particuarly comfortable.
 
For about the price of the RS2i, get the HE-500. Much better in every conceivable way.
