The sound quality or sound signature?
Sound signature is what I meant.
Oh David, you had to do this
. Only one question. Alpha Dogs and rock ?
That's a good question. I think it may be a little light on impact. The TH900 seem to fit the bill with rock more based on my limited listening time.
I posted a quick impression of the two headphones in the Alpha Dogs thread. I actually think the Alpha Dogs dethrone the HE500 as the best high end headphone available for the price.
Possibly, though I can't yet make that assessment without hearing them back to back in a quiet environment. At non-quiet meets, open back headphones fare terribly for me.
Wow!
How do they stack up to the HE-500 in terms of value in your opinion? Do you think you'll place them higher than the HE-500 in sound quality?
Thinking of just switching to a portable setup and getting rid of the HE-500... hmm decisions decisions
I can't yet define which is better between the Alpha Dog or HE-500. It was only for a few minutes that I had the pleasure of listening as there was a line waiting behind me. Also, the iPhone was my source and I wasn't on an amp with which I had any familiarity. Add into the mix that this meet was especially noisy. I can't judge the nuances of the Alpha Dog except to say that it was clearly a genuinely good headphone for the asking price. The sound signature seemed to me to be in line with the bass light R10. I didn't get to compare it back to back. If I were to guess from memory, the R10 outclasses it, but the signatures were noticeably alike based on memory. The most obvious benefit of this is (beyond price) the headphone is serviceable where as the R10 is not.
Few questions here ¬
Did you hear franks WA5 at the meet?
Have you ever heard any of the Glenn OTL's or his other amps?
I will get to hear the Carey 300b soon i was wondering what you though of that compared to your manley 300b especially for hd800?
You have probably been asked this many times but have you ever though of doing a list of your top ten headphones amps?
Sorry about all the questions. I seen in a thread that Genesis are one of your favorite bands but you specified only the Peter Gabriel stuff. I was wondering what you thought of trick of the tail? Even though its phill collins i still think its up there with selling England by the pound.
I didn't hear Frank's WA5 at the meet. Is it different from the standard WA5? I have heard Frank's rig once before, though I don't remember if it was the WA5 specifically. It's been a while. I don't feel I've heard enough amps to really have a top 10 that's fair. Also, a lot of DIY amps are competitive (and sometimes better) than what's on the market. Ari's (Nikongod) amp is competitive with most amps that I've heard.
Trick of the Tail and Wind & Wuthering are still classic genesis to me. On a side note, I think I'm seeing the Musical Box perform SEBTP in a week or two. Excited for that! I think Lamb and SEBTP are their best albums
David, if you have the occasion to try the HP50 (
Tyll's current favorite closed-back headphones), don't hesitate to share your impressions. ^_^
(Same for the MDR-7520 and SRH1540 ...
if you have the occasion.)
I'll have to look for these at the next meet!
David, were you referring to the 'bass heavy', or the 'bass light' R10 in comparing it to the Alpha Dog?
definitely more in line with the bass light R10
