Martin Logan Mikros 90 On-Ear Headphones

Yamaha MT-220: Verdict: overly lean, sometimes hard/strident in the upper midrange/lower treble for me.  Excellent detail, articulate bass.  Wide and high, but not particularly deep soundstage: more layered than 3-dimensional arrangement in space.  Non-exchangeable cable--a real mistake on Yamaha's part, I think.  Now up for sale.

Beyerdynamic DT-1350: Verdict: sounds artificial to me, especially the treble, which does not sound coherent with midrange.  Pretty good sense of 3-D space and excellent transient response.  Non-exchangeable cable--a real design faux pas on Beyer's part, too, I fear. Alas! another near-complete Beyerdynamic disappointment for me.  Now up for sale.

Oppo PM-3:  Verdict: clear, detailed--even nuanced--with excellent instrument separation.  Articulate bass, but midrange can sound hard/confined at times.  Soundstage [like its PM-1 forebear] layered, but not convincingly 3-dimensional and a bit smalliish overall.  Definitely benefits from an aftermarket cable; the original long cable does not convey the dynamics and bass punch that these headphones are capable of.  If you can come up with the extra cash and don't mind an open can, the PM-1 are better/more refined in every respect.  Now up for sale.

harman/kardon CL:  Verdict: a pleasant surprise, and by far the runaway best bang-for-the-buck among the headphones listed.  Musical, detailed and quick, with excellent 3-dimensionality [the best of this bunch for me, anyway].  Bass-prominent?  Yes.  But not slow, muddy or dark to my ears.  Bass goes deep, stays tight and lends to an overall musically appealing audition.  Better cables bring these headphones to the brink of bangiest-for-the-buckiest.

I am running the CL with a Marc Tunis SPC cable with Near terminations and the match is virtually perfect: cleaner, more detailed and smoother midrange than the MT-220; more musical and natural-sounding treble than the DT-1350; quicker, more 3-D and midrange -pleasant than the PM-3.

Next to my cadre of stock and modded Mikros 90, with various re-cable choices, the CL get my vote and my ears.

YMMV

Where's the Mikros 90 LUV?
Still like mine best of all.
The Oppo PM-1 just sold today.
And I just ordered another  custom cable for the Marty Logans!

Got rid of my PM1 in only about a week. :)

Just picked up the DT-1350.
Let the games begin!
:D
The Beyers don't have a detachable cable, so it doesn't look good for the 1350 already.

Sold my 1350 in about a week as well..
:)

The PM1 was nice but sound-wise wasnt worth the price.

The 1350 had the details focused on single traits, but was also an unbalanced & lifeless signature overall.

Mikros90 has the life & details, but the pads are too small and cups tilt too much.

Modding was the only solution for me with this headphone.
That being said, it remains a favorite,
And what you realizw in this hobby, is that once a headphone achieves a certain level, it does not matter how many other newcomers come and go..

Maxx!!!
I have since sold the PM-3, DT-1350 and MT-220.
Have kept the h/k CL, though.
The Mikros 90, stock, with small on-ear pads and vise grip, are still my reigning overall favorites

Yep. The Mikros were a great every day portable.

I only wanna check out the beyer T51, as I remember it had nice mids,
but I would keep am eye out for the ESW9LTD, as I feel that is a more natural progression from the Mikros, and an end game portable for me.
:)

Thoroughly enjoying the Mikros 90 today.  STRAIGHT OUT of my computer, they sound exceptional.
Have not heard the ESW9LTD, but my prior experience with ATH full sized cans is that they tend to be too midrange-prominentand overly polite.
The mids on the Mikros 90 are pristine, detailed and musical enough for me!

  Still enjoying the Mikros 90.
Have sold the MT-220 and kept the h/k CL.

What music do you listen to? Do you like one genre most of the time or are you a musical omnivore? I am consider the HK CL myself as another portable. Still very much enjoying the M500, but the CL sounds very much down my alley as comfort is very important. I can't stand clamp force as I seem to be fairly sensitive and even the Vmoda M80 and XS could cause me discomfort.
