Martin Logan Mikros 90 On-Ear Headphones

It's not the done thing around here, but I put my HM5 pads over some L-Cush pads on my MS1s. They actually dig deep and have a very satisfying bass. Most people are adamant that pleather and Grado don't mix, but my experience couldn't be further from the truth.

I can always pull out the other pair of MLs to check if they're defective, but I highly doubt it. I'm well aware that these are finicky with placement, but I'm quite capable of putting them on and getting a seal. I think it's down to two things. A) The drivers need to loosen up a bit and B) The MS1s actually have very good bass when it isn't all leaking through the airy foam pads, but few people actually try anything other than Grado-sanctioned pads. No skin off my nose if no one believes that my MS1s currently have better bass than these.

A) The drivers do need some burn-in.  I think you will be quite surprised at what you hear after 50 hours.

B) Okay.  When you talk about good bass, are you referring to sub-bass or mid-bass?   How does the bass compare when you use a Grado-sanctioned pad?

  Nah just from what I remember
I've heard MS-1 and MS-Pro and remember them both being very punchy and exciting
Mikros 90's bass is a little more in-line with the music

I think the bass seems more punchy because there is very little sub-bass.

I've owned the SR60, SR80, SR125, SR225, the MS1 and the MS2 -- the Mikros 90 has A LOT more bass than all the Grados I listed.

You either have a defective pair or you are not getting a good seal (not putting them on right).   Did you perhaps stretch them too much?

X2. Mikros have more bass than the Grado I have had. Maybe not a lot more but more.

On another note, it appears my stupid ET1 cable is finally out for delivery. I don't know what it was doing between 8:09 on the 19th when it left the sort facility there and 7:00AM today when it reached my P.O. Under a days driving distance.

Grado-sanctioned pad is no comparison. Hardly any sub stuff going on there.

I did just discover that the stupid 4-pole plug wasn't making a good connection when I A/Bed. Sound is way better now :D. But I think there's some congestion that needs to be cleared up. And some stridence that will hopefully reduce.

i experimented with pleather over grados once...if u can get it "right", well sealed..
 the bass can be amplified n directed with good punch  i think.
So i dun doubt the Ms1+HM5pads can excel the cold stockMikros as of NOW..
but not for long. :p

==============

Alright, Lors, thanks for the clarification! For anyone wondering, the vmoda cable can be found here: http://v-moda.com/shareplay-extended-audio-cable/.

Also, yeah, I'm working on getting my third pair to modify. Right now I'm planning on sending back my second pair to amazon to recoup about $30. Have my mod materials waiting for that third pair...

  i have a few of erich kunzel/s cds which non of my bigheadfones can " lift it off" ...
as if the giant is asleep somewhat...sedated.
But this Mikros wakes it up brilliantly with minute details in depth, splendid !

Listening to Takeadake And Neptune straight out of my laptop with the modded Mikros 90 and the Auvio cable.

NICE!!!!  The sense of 3-D spatial "rightness" is so so enjoyable on this track.  A percussive dream.

Thank you, Lors, for a nice change pace from my usual venues.

Anyone who can help.

In India, these still cost $300. Is there any website, from which I could get it shipped to India, with the price not exceeding $100..

  Yay, I got 'em!

  First impression is some serious congestion with some stridence. Some hot-sauce burn should clear that right up.

  Bass is lighter than my Alessandro MS1s with HM5 pads, which I wasn't expecting. If I need more bass from the MLs, I'll look at shoving whatever I've got in my drawers into them

  Comfort is actually not bad once I take out my industrial piercing. That's a given, though. I've stretched them over one of my bookshelf speakers just to break that part in a bit more as well.

  So yeah, not exactly blown away, but I'll reserve judgment for when they've broken in.

Oh yeah, right out of the box it can be horrifying for a little bit. I plugged in a brand new set yesterday, and I couldn't believe the difference. Be patient, feed 'em the hot sauce, and try not to judge them too quickly. It takes time....more than you think.

Just when you think they have maxed out, they'll surprise you even more!

Ain't it the truth!  Well said, kevb..  ++1

Listening to my I P A D..... thru the 3 cable combo....just vocal-ballads;
the sound  so enveloped me, filled my room to the brim...
so captivating the vocals..i am overwhelmed;
i fear it might have overtaken my home rig..
for the first time, at home..
my tube amps are COLD,
my audiogd dac is OFF..

just my I P A D..
and 3 bundle of wires..
and a Mikros with rubbish inside the cups.

HI END enjoyment.

I cannot get the 4-pole plug to work in any of my conventional 3-pole jacks.  That's why I have practically given up on the stock cable altogether.  The only way I can get full stereo from the stock cable is by pinching the [middle] microphone button, which is a pain.  I wouldn't be surprised if some of the early negative impressions were related to the 4-pole plug snafu.  Just another example of ML's poor planning: designing that plug on the Mikros 90 to be used strictly with i devices.

"I cannot get the 4-pole plug to work in any of my conventional 3-pole jacks."

u meant the adaptor to plug into your amp?
when i connect the stockcable plug into the ultrasone extention socket...
i have to push it in 3/4 way only...that way i get full stereo sound,
if i push it all the way in..the sound is either mono or very distant.

==========

get your blue tac, n the felt n the roadkillskin ok...
u will hear ...  solid HEAR-THRU BASSSSSS

after a certain permutation. :p
