Yeah, I remember this one time I was at school with my Grados and someone said to me "jeez! Are these things 50 years old or something?"

actually not meant for music, not even close. These are really high impedence cans meant to be driven by crystal radios without amplification. You know, the oatmeal box radio you built in school for science class that did not work for crap
No power supply,no amp and yet there is sound
"watson,I hear you man"
I actually plan to obtain some of the vintage cans and build a "powerless" receiver with my youngest son.And then when he says
"dad, how do we get a radio station without batteries or a plug"
I will respond with the truth

"MAGIC SON"

wanna see me turn mom into a newt ?

Hey Rickster...

Is that really true, that you can make a radio without ANY power??

Damn... Science classes must be a helluva lot better in the US!!

(What kinda ohmage are we talking here... I daresay a lot more than the 300 of the high end senns?)

Absolutely ! On my way to work but when i get in I can post some links.
And by High impedence i mean really high, like 2,000 ohms.It must be that high for the radio to drive the headset or and amp would be needed. And obviously the headphones are very efficient. But that efficiency varies enough from model to model that in order to pick up international radio stations you must have the most efficient cans you can get

Please, show me how to do that and I'll show you how to make rain. BTW, does it work with assorted fauna like in laws, nephews and nices?

Here's some crystal radio links you might enjoy. I used to lay in bed late at night when I was a tot and explore the vast world of AM radio with a crystal set. What fun it was! Mine was just like this. I would connect the alligator clip to a gas heater line.
