Robert Fripp's solo in "The Sailor's Tale" has been my favorite since about 1991. Skip ahead to about 2:30...

Hadn't heard this before.  Song is dope!

Metallica - One

Oh heck yeah. Hammett has more than one winner but that is a good one.

Since the title was "your favourite" I'm going with nirvana - verse chorus verse - 1:37-2:07
There's nothing remotely technical or special or whatever about it, but it infects me and makes me feel stuff...those type of solos are usually my favourite over pure tech or self indulgent proggy wankery.

Seconding Maggot Brain. I've never heard another solo that approaches the electric emotion of Hazel's work here--I think he even out-Hendrixes Hendrix.

+2 (sort of)

Maggot Brain is just an awesome, awesome thing. I'm not quite sure I'm ready to go so far as to say Hazel out-Hendrixes Hendrix, but he's playing in the same league. Hazel's work on Maggot Brain far surpasses an absolute slew of guitarists. Their are 1000's of guitarists that are revered for their so-called virtuosity, who have never approached the level of Maggot Brain.

It's always dangerous to mention any guitarist's name in the same sentence as Hendrix, but in this case, it's entirely deserving.

I think the reason Eddie Hazel's name doesn't come up more frequently in discussions like this is because it's a pretty easy thing to just focus on *rock.* Not that Maggot Brain doesn't rock, because it does, but obviously most of what Funkadelic did was all about p-funk--it's pretty easy to gloss over the guitar playing in non-rock genres, in spite of the huge amount of incredible guitar players out there who don't fall squarely within the 'rock' pen. One of my favorite guitarists, Sir Richard Bishop, comes to mind--check out his (acoustic) free-folk guitar playing below:

Anyways, back to awesome guitar solos. ^^
