The Russian firmware is louder by a few clicks on the volume pot.....From the headphone out, it sounds pretty good! I using FitEar335DW

I had a similar observation. Moreover, I think mids are fuller now and depth is improved.  However, this is maybe my imagination only :wink:

I am listening and A/B' ing them at the moment.....
 
Volume match old firmware 47 Russian 43...I will try other amps ...tomorrow.
 
BUT will try the SE535 now....previously no bass at all so will see if there is any change!

I'd be pretty pissed off if I was an AK120 owner right about now. 
 
The difference between the units has now been pretty much reduced to an extra dac, for almost twice the price.
 
I'm certainly not denying the SQ is improved in the newer device, however it's value has just taken one more solid kick to the nuts!
