Learning to hear..

Im recently new to Head-Fi and on one late night lurking session, i thought i saw something about some CD that walks you through what sounds it is that you are hearing, with explanations on what each means and what to look out for from your gear. I could have imagined the whole thing as it was pretty late, and i have searched and searched, still to no avail. Does such a thing exist? Or was i Head-Fi dreaming?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers

Stereophile magazine has a series (3?) of test CDs which identify various common recording and set up issues, including phase (mis)alignment, jitter audibility, frequency extension (>15 kHz) along with other stuff like test tones to challenge speaker placement etc.  Other groups like Chesky Records have their own versions as well.  Almost all of them have actual music tracks to demonstrate the concepts as well has test tones and mastering demonstrations.  A simple google search should turn up several examples.

Although what you have mentioned, i will definitely look into. It's not exactly what i was thinking of. It was almost like an audible version of the glossary of terms that is a very good thread on this same forum. Pity. I feel that the glossary can only take me so far. As i don't have anyone to compare thoughts with in real life. It would be very easy to misinterpret those terms wrongly.

Is it the Chesky demo disk? There's a track explaining what you are about to hear and then the music itself.

WOW!! I reckon that is exactly that. Thank you so much. I've had another look round the internet and found there are two.

Ultimate Demonstration Disc Volume 1

Ultimate Demonstration Disc Volume 2

EDIT: I knew i had seen it somewhere on Head-Fi. A quick google search with the above title, coupled with Head-Fi just turned up this result..

There you go.

I really like those discs. You should note though, they are not for headphones testing.

Yeah na that's alright. I didn't think they were. It's just going to be nice to have a good base to build my knowledge from. I'm about to go interstate for a holiday but now I can't wait to get back and take these for a spin. What do you think of the disks? Do you feel they are a good resource?

Much appreciated torresfelipe!!

while ill definitely give these cds a try (if i can get hold of them) im wondering if theres anything similar done with electronical music, unlike the chesky albums wich i understand are mostly done with jazz?

Now that, that would be something of great importance to me as well. A large portion of my muscial taste lies within all forms of Electronica. Be interested to see if something comes up

If it's headphone you wanna use to test with, try Open Your Ears - a collaboration between Head-Fi & HD Tracks.

There's a Head-Fi forum thread discussing about it too.

Great! Thankyou. This will be of great interest to myself and hopefully others starting out. I'm looking forward to having some time to sit down and really get stuck into my gear. Have made all these big purchases lately and haven't had a real good sit down session with it all yet. I'll definately be checking this out as soon as i get some time though.
