Three things I've listened to today:
 
Count Basie Orchestra: "Whirlybird" (The album I've got has a slightly different arrangement; unfortunately this performance has more horn and drum and too little of Basie)

 
2NE1: "Hate You" (I'll admit -- it's mostly for the weird Bratz vs. Mad Max video, but the music doesn't totally suck)

 
Drunken Boat: "Home" (No idea if this is an official video or not. Kind of an odd choice for a major label to sign as part of the whole grunge explosion in the early 90s, but that was a strange time.)

We're going out for tacos tonight.

That's not a joke. I never had good tacos until we moved south. They're one of the best things about living here.


You have good tacos in North Carolina? That's kind of surprising. It's really interesting how different "Mexican food" is in different regions. Southern California, Arizona, New Mexico & Texas all have fairly different styles of what is all called "Mexican food" - and they are all really good in different ways! :D

Oh yeah, there's a huge (relatively) Central American population locally. We've even cut back on our Saturday trips to the downtown farmer's market to spend more time at the Hispanic market on the outskirts. Awesome food, and there's a taco stand where the man running the show works aside a massive boiling kettle filled with pork, organs, and pork skin that he pulls out, chops up, and makes tacos with. From vat to taco, all somehow in one swift movement. It's as mesmerizing as watching a sushi chef.

Behold what Nokia did with that humongous sensor (and two mic on either end) in a phone. View in 1080p for best experience.

 
A grain free image, while the sound is distortion free, with good imaging and detail for a live recording; that's pretty impressive.

At least the older records: X&Y, Parachutes, A rush of blood... Truth be told, I kind of like Viva la Vida too.


Their 2009 performance of yellow at Tokyo is really nice too.

My wife makes a killer salsa. She learned how to make it the "traditional" way - she roasts the tomatoes & peppers, skins them, etc, etc - I can't even eat the bottled stuff anymore - it's fresh or nothing! The only "bad" thing is that since it's not heat stabilized, it will get just keep getting hotter and hotter as it sits in the fridge. After a week or so, it will practically burn a hole in the back of your tongue. The trick is to just keep eating it nonstop - it's only when you stop that you are in BIG trouble! :eek:

A few days ago I tried watching that Here Comes Honey Boo Boo show you mentioned before.  (I forget where though?  Was it in this thread?)  I made it though about 2/3 of an episode before I had to turn it off.  It gave me this sick-to-my-stomach feeling like the cops were going to burst in any second just because I was watching it.
 
Part of that is just that I hate "reality" shows.  Even when I was pretty big into UFC I couldn't stand to watch anything but the fights in Spike's UFC reality show.  Honey Boo Boo just takes all that crap I can't stand to the next level.  I think you said something about watching it for what amounts to morbid curiosity but that show isn't just a train wreck.  It's a $DEITY condemned vivisection.  If I was trying to learn about child beauty pageants as a phenomenon or something I could deal with reading factual reports from observers in the field or even a proper documentary on the subject.  All the drama enhancing TV production techniques they insist on using just rocket it past the threshold of what I can tolerate.
 
It sure does stand out from most of the stuff on TV though...

But then again when I meet hard science students weeping over their failed experiment designs I don't feel so bad about doing something that is less schematised.

I'm not sure how to place this music. It's like Goldfrapp meets folk rock meets... I don't know what. They were the support act for the Patrick Wolf concert I went to recently, and while her voice isn't perfect I thought it was pretty interesting stuff.

Well dude, if business travel takes you through the Research Triangle Park area, we can make a hookup. Across the walkway from that taco stand is a fried peanut vendor who comes down from his farm in Virginia, the peanuts are usually still warm from the fryer. I'm actually a wuss when it comes to spice - I use to go for it pretty hard, but now my acid reflux has taken all the fun out of it... :xf_eek:

I worked for a company that had a branch office in Research Triangle Park. Unfortunately (or fortunately as it turned out) they downsized me to the curb before I had a chance to visit there.

I'm liking a lot of stuff about the Clip Zip so far.  It sounds great by itself, has very little hiss with even my SE530s, none with PFE232s, and Rockbox has so many cool features it's like dropping a starving man into first class buffet.
 
OTOH there are some drawbacks that can't be fixed as easily as the firmware.  I think it's actually too small.  My fingers are almost too big to use it and all the clicking you have to do to build playlists starts to make my hand cramp up if I try to do it one handed.  I also have to wonder what they were smoking when they decided to leave off a hold switch.  The OF uses the power button on the Zip's top to toggle hold on and off which easy to use and easily defeated by chance.  Rockbox uses two of the buttons pressed simultanously to toggle it.  That sond like it wouldn't work well either but the fact that getting the timing right on purpose is quite fiddly solves that problem and creates another.
 
I haven't seen a DAP that wasn't full of silly problems like those since the Rio Karma so the Zip looks like a keeper to me since it has the least number of them that I'm aware of.

Well this is something I've listened to before going to sleep (3 hours before) and when I first woke up:

It sounds especially clean for a youtube video, and really great with a good open headphones.

And just imagine a better setup for the recording... Hopefully Nokia can spread the love of PureView (not the LOLgigantic sensor, but the 'concept' of it by Nokia's words :p) to WP properly.
