Best classical recordings...ever!

Purchased this box set a while ago and have been taking my time going through the 60 CDs.

Majority of the recordings are complete Beethoven, Mozart, Schubert string quartets by the Vienna Konzerthaus Quartet and the Barylli Quartet. Quite a bit of Haydn in there, as well as other selection of quintets, sextets, septets and octets.

Was pleased with the inclusion above given my recent interest with Czech chamber works, (and chamber works in general).

If Sills' Lucia di Lammermoor is in there, turn on here Mad Scene and have a good time!

Arguably one of the greatest solo works for the violin.

'On one stave, for a small instrument, the man writes a whole world of the deepest thoughts and most powerful feelings. If I imagined that I could have created, even conceived the piece, I am quite certain that the excess of excitement and earth-shattering experience would have driven me out of my mind.' - Brahms

And the Busoni arrangement, played masterfully by Rubinstein. I always thought the Busoni one was over the top, but Rubinstein gets it just right. Does anybody know in which album by Rubinstein this is in?

Unfortunately not. There is a orchestral box set (which I don't have) but it does not seem to be included there either.

However, it is in the smaller Westminster box set that was released in the West. The above larger box sets I think were released only in Korea by Universal - amazon had the chamber box so jumped on it - weird way of doing things but there you go...

Luckily I'm able to stream it, so that's my evening sorted.

Ah didn't notice it was chamber. Still, nice to see so many boxes still getting released even though the CD is dead ^_^

I am thankful to have the opportunity to buy box sets before the format becomes totally obsolete. I also like the cover art, what can I say...
I shall continue to eke out as much value from them by boring my grandchildren about how it was 'back then'.

Currently looking at some CD players for times when I just want to listen instead of being distracted by youtube.

There is still something to just putting on one album and giving it a thorough listen, something that having one's whole library or the whole intrawebz on hand can really disrupt, especially for us channel surfers ^_^ Covert art can be a great thing, but that is the one area where I have to give the nod to vinyl over CD :/

Of course when I wrote 'youtube' I meant 'headfi'

I recently found some of my dad's old classical LPs in some old forgotten boxes. They certainly do have unmatched physical presence. Many were records that had been posted on this thread, and which I had no idea we were in possession of. I had a good old chat about music when I met up with him to hand them back. I'm not ashamed (ok maybe a little) to have (mis)quoted some of the posts from this thread during that convo.

I remember at the dawn of the cd era box sets were often so expensive to be out of reach to most people(like me).
I also remember at the same time being able to buy used vinyl box sets at extremely affordable prices.

The ability to acquire cd box sets is now a similar situation for many; nearly obsolete and much more affordable.
That said, I`ve converted my entire music library to FLAC and welcome the lack of bulk.

Hilary Hahn doing Paganini Concerto is very good. Swedish orchestra.

Solti's Wagner Ring cycle with the VPO is coming out at a box set bargain price, on June 9th. Decca. 14CDs plus a book. Should be interesting. I only have the highlights disc set. Pretty good.
