Well I have found many topics on the HD598s. Thanks to you guys here at head-fi, I purchased them after the very good reviews. I was wondering however, what might be a good next purchase? Maybe some closed headphones? I really and wanting to stick with over ear headphones due the the amazing feel of them. I have a Fiio e17(currently being RMAed after the aux gold input popped out after a couple uses) and in my pc I have a Creative Titanium HD. Any suggestions are welcome. Obviously I cant step up to a thousand dollar headset, but I would like something that I can use along with my 598s that will over a different feel to music. I bought the 598s as an all around headphone for both listening and my gaming addiction. Now maybe I need something for mainly audio? I dont know. I will stop rambling and let you guys here at head-fi shower me with wisdom.

Music I like: Bass head music like dubstep and Electronica, Rock, Alternative, some classical. Basically everything except country music.( with the exception of a few songs maybe)

thank you all. Cheers,

the Ultrasone 900s seem nice. Would these pair better then say an HD650? also Im thinking of getting an e9 amp for my desktop to use with my e17. Would I be better maybe with getting a shiict asgard amp for these? Im just really have to depend on the community for help on amp and headphones as I am in a small small small small college town for school. I have nowhere to go and test stuff. ^_^

It really depends on your preferences and needs. Closed back vs open. The HD650 is the better headphone
in terms of future investment. They will scale very well with better gear.

I've never been a fan of of Ultrasone or their S logic, however the HD650 is quite laid back, impressive mid bass,
with the better imaging and soundstage. Ultrasone are bass heavy in a muddy way.

I think the HE-400 would be a good pick for you. Just not sure if you really want to try out the ortho flavor.

HE-400 with Asgard or Lyr is quite good.

Ultrasone should be fine with the e17. I'd also upgrade the e17 to Asgard with HD650.

I would also second Hifiman HE-400. Those are really awesome cans. They sound like they should cost several times more.

If you don't want to go over budget, go Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro. I think it's king with dubstep under the $200 price range. Save the rest of your cash for a better amp. Not to say Fiio E17 is bad, but... there are better amps.

But if you don't want to mess with amps at all, and you want a portable headphone that you can take anywhere and plug into anything, I would highly recommend the Audio Technica ATH-ES10.

Sounds like you are following my footsteps fairly closely.  I haven't heard them; but assuming the 598 are similar to my 595, and you are a basshead; I'd point you to something like Beyer dt770s (I one paired with my 595s).  I have an e17and a Fiio E09K arriving Monday for my desk.  (Planning on moving my GoVibe to my work desk with a uc0202 dac)

The 770s would excel for the bass heavy music you listed.  I generally do 'easy listening' (Skype chats; most background music while coding) wearing the 595s as they are a little more 'airy' and light, the 770s are mostly used for gaming and when I'm in the mood for bassy music or  gaming now.  I'd never bring the 595s to a lan party; where the 770s are a godsend. (I directly attribute my being called out for cheating @ 100+ person CS 1.6 lans on my dt770s)

tldr

598
    Open; light; airy, balanced(easy listening)
770
Bassy, closed; better sound stage (gaming)

For more bassy music I'd actually recommend the Ultrasone HFI-580.  To be honest I just use my 598s for most types of music except electronica and rap.  For that I'll go to my Amperiors or 580s.  Nice thing about them is they won't need anything beyond what you have for any amp.

I have the 598's and they are great!! I also have a pair of Grado 325's that I think compliment the 598's very well. But thats more of a side grade than upgrade. I have to agree with the others and say the HE-400 would be an awesome upgrade. But the HD650 will sound better and better as you start to upgrade your amps and sources, and I feel like they will always have a place in my collection. Best of luck to you man, let us know what you decided on!!

Others listed some pretty great suggestions here. I think you want something less laidback and with more bass.

I've listened to the D2000 but was a bit unimpressed. I think judging by what others have said, the HE-400 is a superior alternative.

The ultrasones are known for having great textured bass. I've never listened to one but hopefully I will one day. Another good option.

Can't really recommend any of the Beyerdynamics at all due to their treble. Overall, they sound natural (airy) and unnatural (treble) at the same time. I haven't listened to the DT770 yet though.

P.S. I do not recommend the HD650. Their bass is too unnatural - bloated and warm. They also share too much of that laidback signature with the 598... you want some more diversity. And overall, I vastly prefer the 598s over the 650s anyways, even with "proper" amplification. I'd say look into the planar magnetics or the ultrasones. Maybe some of the more expensive Denon lines if you can afford them.

First let me say thank you to all of the posters who have helped. After looking at the posts and some PMs I have decided to get the Denon D5000s before they disappear from the shelves. I may after that end up selling my 598s for something like the HE 400s as they have high ratings by a number of posters in some other threads.

Again thanks for all the help. CHEERS!

Zach
