11 idevices eh.

You have just given me an idea.
How about this for super sound with the hifi-m8 and idevices.

Mutiple IdeviceS> usb multi hub> hifim8>headphones.
Sync ideviceS to play the same song at the same time-total surround sound.
:)

I actually thought about ditching the iDevice option, and getting the LX and a different DAP, but if I have this figured correctly, both models are essentially the same except the idevice model takes digital out from idevice, and LX trades this capability for optical input. They both treat USB input the same.

I am unwilling to either use 5 - 8 year old iRiver device or pony up the $$$$ for the AK devices (or maybe the iBasso DAP?) that have optical output.  My macbook air does not have optical output, I may or may not ever have a regular macbook pro again, and the macbook pros may or may not continue to support optical output in future versions.

Given this, is there any sane reason for an Apple fanboy to get the LX version - I will essentially never use the optical input.

Am I correct with the above?  Am I missing any functionality the the LX has, that I am not aware of?  Thanks All!

EDIT - one more - Is the optical out from the combo jack on the iDevice version fixed volume, or variable via the volume pot - I think this is a dumb question, in that the optical out comes from the digital board, and the volume pot controls the output level of the analog board - can someone confirm this?

Upstream:
Acer & Lenovo Laptops>Foobar2000>JPlay
iphone 4>Flacplayer
ipad3>Flacplayer
Just for fun: run M8 through Burson HA160-DS, & Audioengine A5+ on my desktop
Downstream:
Ety H2, Westone 3, Ultrasone HFI-780, Grado PS500, HiFiMan HE5LE (single-end & balanced - that should be interesting)

- LX is just the same as M8 "regular", except the iDevice input is replaced by an optical (TOSLINK) input. That's all. Basically, you lose iDevices, gain iRiver devices.

- The optical output is not volume-processed. It carries the signal that comes in over the USB input (laptop input) or iDevice input. You can think of it as another feature of M8 -- "USB to TOSLINK converter." It allows you to use the HiFi-M8 in conjunction with an external DAC and HP amp in case that's what you prefer to do.

Note: If you have a HiFi-M8 LX and feed an optical signal into the optical input, you will not get that signal on the optical output. Only the USB will be seen at the optical output (Otherwise you'd get an expensive TOSLINK to TOSLINK converter that in essence did nothing)

Yes, thank you Damon. It was a busy weekend, so I have not had a chance to respond yet. Understood that you have this need. We will continue to work in this, but since the feature is "cosmetic" and does not affect audio quality, we may serve it as a firmware update after shipping.

Sorry to be a pain in the a**. :)

Yes, cosmetic and perhaps it may be rendered void in a future OS update too? I dont know.
But thank you for including me in your considerations are this small quirky point.
