They are tubes made of carbon atoms.  I'm not entirely sure how it's used in headphone drivers, but I'd expect it's relatively crude - probably just nanotube filaments suspended in a plastic film.  You could read more about carbon nanotubes here if you'd like:

Thanks for the wikipedia link. What's funny is I still don't think anyone really knows how they nanotubes are used in the headphones.

Can someone do me a favor and listen to Metallica S&M - The Ecstasy of Gold and tell me if there isn't some weird clipping (not sure if that's the right word) on the right channel? I am not good with instruments but it's some sort of wind/brass instrument and it sounds bad.

Yeah, I hear it clearly with the FXD80s at the moment, toward the end of the track.

Totally newbie question - what causes this? I don't think I've ever heard headphones or speakers clip. Really. Maybe I don't play music loud enough or listen to the wrong (right?) tracks but it sounds really bad. Is this an issue with the music? Was it mastered with frequencies the HA-S500's can't handle?

Yeah, none of us know!  And unless we have access to an electron microscope, we won't be able to figure it out unless JVC tells us what they did. :p

Clipping in the digital realm usually happens if the signal is pushed past the line level (0dB) signal - basically, it's like pushing the waveform against a brick wall and flattening the top of it.  It's actually the same thing that gives distortion guitar the bite, but it's not so good when unintentional.  Sometimes bad recordings or just old ones clip already, so there's not much they can do about those.

Get yourself a JVC FXD80 instead. Cheaper and better sounding earphone Imo.

So I was browsing through the bay. Look at these. lol.

Who says you have to just have all black. These will fit the HA-S500 but cost more than the standard black velours or so.

With a little burn-in and the velours, these are now my official work headphones.

However, for home where I don't mind looking like a cyberman, I'm going to stick to full-size over-ear phones for comfort. I think I'm going to sell the second set of S500's.

Anyone want my second unopened set at $66 paypaled/shipped today via USPS Priority? Less wait and $10 less than the ebay seller.

Pardon me if that's not kosher. I can make a regular for sale post of course, but it's probably only of interest to people reading this thread.

I'm at around 17 hours or so, and i'm getting the bloaty bass that you guys were describing. Just waiting for them to tighten up.

For you guys with lots of burn-in, do these mellow out at all? I'm still finding them a tad too energetic in the highs, setting my ears off. I like the sound, it's the painful sensation that sets my tinnitus off that bothers me.
Good thing these still sound pretty good at super low volumes!

I am totally fine with the bass but I can't stand the mids-highs. I am surprised you are finding them "energetic". I think I have about 20 hours of burn-in, maybe 25. I am letting them run all day today so that's another 8 hours. The highs are finally starting to come through for me and the bass has improved (even though I don't really care or needed them to).

We're sorry. We are unable to retrieve tracking information for this shipment at this time.

So I am hoping this is a positive step...lol.
