What is a DAC amp?

Hey guys. Can anyone give me a simple description of what a DAC amp is, and what it does? From what I can piece together, it helps high impedance headphones increase their volume output...is this accurate to any extent? Thanks!

A DAC/Amp is a term for a device that has a DAC (digital/analog converter) and an amplifier built into it.

A DAC is required to change the digital signal into an analog signal so that you can hear it. An amplifier, as the name implies, will amplify this signal.

Just to add, the speaker equivalent is usually called a "(stereo) receiver." It may or may not have a tuner but post-digital discs they have a DAC in them.
