I use Home Theater with Enhanced Stereo off. I use headphones and Home Theater seems to have the most nature sound and staging. The other modes (Headphones, TV, War Tapes) seem to distort the sound unnaturally, probably due to dynamic range compression. War Tapes sound like an action movie where the gun shots are exaggerated and you can't hear the footsteps or dialogue (cues as well).

The positional audio cues in BF3 are pretty lousy actually, so it'll probably be hard to achieve regardless of setting. Perhaps change the audio mode every death.
