Not so sure about this lol.  What DACs have you tried?  As the source of your transmission line it represents the greatest change in overall sound signature, aside from maybe your amplifier.  Sure going from a $200 DAC to a $300 DAC would not incur much change but the greater disparity in price generally reflects a greater change in sound quality - good or bad.  Speakers are only there to reflect what your equipment sends it, thus changing your equipment will induce a sonic change in your speakers.

Totally agree here. Source should alway be king as you can never do better than what the source can deliver. While DAC's have improved both sonicaly & spec wise we are still dependant on how well they are implimented. A cheap DAC chip can sound as good or even better than an expensive DAC chip if , 1. The cheap DAC was well implimented & 2. The expensive DAC was poorly implimented

The DAC in the Sony SACD player I had was a poor quality DAC but I was able to improve it's sound up to the level of the stock STX card if not a little better with some filter changes, power supply & coupling changes. On the other hand with the exception of the filter tweeks which were not needed on the STX card the same changes to the STX card were a phenominal improvement over what the SACD player was even once modified.

I have incorperated these type changes everywhere in my system with benefits gained everywhere implimented. The result is an amazing level of resolution that is at once startling yet smooth at the same time. Even the more hard sounds found in some recordings make more musical sense when played back with such high resolution. Yes some instruments are meant to be piercing in tone & when the are not they sound bland & lifeless. The rest of the sound has to be correct though in order that such piercing tones to have musical meaning. It is for that reason that I went whole hog on my power supply mods as I found that along with coupling improvements This is where you get the greatest benefits to the sound.

Many people here think that having the best speakers is the only way to improved sound but they only reflect what they are given & if you have a poor source they will give poor results such that a much less expensive system will outperform them if given a good source & amplification. Note the avoidance of the word cheap here as many less expenve componants and speakers are in fact capable of performing at a high level given the right circumstances. The drivers in the M-Audio BX5 speakers I own are capable of very high performance even though they are inexpensive but the internal amps were holding them back. Once modified in the fashoin that I do they sound absolutely amazing with thier resolution.
