Will the Xonar DG built in amp be enough for the 598? I'm planning on buying the 598 today but I don't have an amp for it.

The Xonar DG will have no problem driving the Senn HD598 (50-Ohm).

Do you think the 598 would be fine without an amp?

The Xonar DG comes with a built in half-way decent headphone amplifier.
Are there better headphone amplifiers then what comes with the Xonar DG, heck ya.
Your looking at least $70 for a A/C powered headphone amplifier that might sound better.

I was considering the Fiio E10 or the JDS Lab O2. wasn't sure if there would be much of an improvement. thanks!

You could not use the Fiio E10's DAC with the Xonar DG anyway.
The Fiio E11 would pair nice with the Xonar DG.
The JDS lab O2 would be great.
The Xonar D1 (or DX) comes with a better DAC then the DG.
Used D1 & DX sell for $50
Pairing the D1 (or DX) with an add-on external headphone amplifier like the E11 or O2 would make a great combo.

i dont think the DAC would be necessary for me. i dont listen to any lossless files. just want to bump up the bass a little more. i read that the 598's bass isnt really there unless i amp it a bit

So you do not have an Xonar DG yet?
So I'm assuming you would plug the amplifier into the motherboard's 3.5mm output jack?

i actually just came back from buyin the 598 and DG lol. i just have a feeling the DG by itself wont be enough. i might get an e9 or O2. but yeah, what you mentioned was my original plan. you think i should cancel the DG? i gotta wait for them to ship it to the store i went to

I've used my HD558 with a few DG's, worked fine.
Otherwize your looking ar spend a lot more cash for something that can drive the HD598, like the Fiio E10 ($80).
Technically, the E10 comes with a better amplifier then the DG.
And the E10s built in DAC would be better then the motherboards built in DAC.

okay ill stick with the DG.

i noticed that the E10 has a bass booster. would that actually add more bass than the O2 without a bass booster?
is it worth it to look for amps that have the bass booster option?

Yes. Both have flat frequency response without bass boost, and low output impedance, so the bass should sound about the same at matched volume. Xonar cards can also boost the bass (unintentionally, and with the only option of turning it off being the use of an external amplifier) because of the high output impedance.

sounds legit, thanks. would it make sense to buy an e7 or 17 now with the 598 and then get an e9 later if i do get more expensive cans with higher impendance? not sure if i used the term 'impendance' correctly lol. let me know if the question didnt make sense

I'm guessing the HD598 will do the job for you good enough that you will not feel the need to buy other headphone for quite a while.
