Sennheiser HD 700 Impressions Thread

  Hi Evsshrug

Once you get a handle on them (and some sleep) I’d be curious on your K712/HD700 take.
After I picked up the 700’s my prior roster consisting of the AKG 701s (with bass port mod), K501, Grado SR325is and HD580/600s hit the chopping block.

The HD580/600s were the last to go but only after I acquired the K712s, which I felt were closest to them but with more extended base and a larger better layered sound field.

Then it came down to deciding if I really needed more than one phone so there was at one point a toss up between the 700s and the 712s, extended listening continually proved the 700s have much better micro detail retrieval and air but still richer (not warmer) overall than the AKGs and then there is the 700s damn comfort factor so the theK712s went up for sale, twice.
Still there is something about the 712s, or maybe it’s just me being sentimental as I’ve always have had AKGs around for the last thirty years or more, at home and in the studio.
Suffice to say I now alternate between them and the 700s, now just to do a bit of surgery to get them configured for a balanced connection  like my 700s.

Then......... come the new year I really need to try some planars from Audeze and HiFiMAN,........who am I fooling when I say we only need one pair of phones.

Hello Rob80b,

l'm just curious: would you mind to tell me the differences you find (if any) between the HD-700 SE and balanced? l will reterminate the cable of mine, and would just like to have your impressions, if you happen to find some time for it. Thanks in advance!

By the way, very nice 'hi-fi corner' you have there! l like it's very colourful

Honestly.....not much if any..but I do appreciate the extra 3dBs (6dBs with a balanced source) of gain with the balanced connection.... especially with vinyl.

I am definitely not a vinyl afficionado (or even appreciator) but that's a fine looking device right there!

I've about a 1000 or so albums from my pre-digital era so I figured it's worth getting the most out of them.
The improved sub platter improves surface noise considerably which is much appreciated when using headphones.

Nice table. I'm a VPI guy. HD 800 and vinyl surface noise is hard for me to handle. Even fresh off the VPI vacuum machine. 700s definitely win that contest. Nice from a Schiit Vali. Slamming from a Mjolnir.

Hi everyone,
I was just about to hit the buy button on the HiFiMan - He400i but at the last minute I saw these and the beyer T90s and like the look of both very much. However, I am just a little worried about the treble (I imagine you've heard this before). When paired with a fairly neutral amp (specifically the firestone fubar HD) is it overly strident or sibilant? I'm fine with a slightly prominent treble as long as it doesn't start to get fatiguing.
Also, if I do come to find that they're a little bright for my tastes, how well do they respond to EQ? I was thinking perhaps I could soften the treble just a touch.
If anyone could recommend the beyers or the senns for my situation that would be great.
Thanks in advance

Hi folks!

I am interested in a pair of HD700 headphones. I would like to make sure I get a recent  serial number so can you please tell me which approximate serial number you have and when and where you purchased your HD700s?

I did the same when I was buying the HD800 and the results were rewarding.

Cheers!

So far I haven't found these fatiguing unless I use a cheap source and go looking for trouble songs :D

Rob8ob,
I'm definitely going to take my time getting to know them, but I'll also definitely post my take on K712/HD700. FYI, I didn't perform the bass mod on my Q701 because I liked the bass where it was and felt more interested in smoother treble and thicker mids... Trying a few other headphones, I found that AKG's have thicker Mids already than many, and my used Q701 actually had MORE bass than the K712, I suspect this was due to pad break-in and possibly a slow build-up of oils from my pretty dry skin (like I-take-antibiotics-to-prevent-inflammation-on-my-facial-skin level dry). I had so many good times with the Q701 it was hard to let them go!

The HD700 seems very revealing of what the tube in my amp sounds like... The HD700 in general feels so linear.

After having the HD 700 for almost 2 weeks, I am still happy to have it. My previous grievances against this headphone are still quite valid, but I find myself caring less and less about them the more I listen. This headphone does many things pretty well, and at the price point its at its a pretty good value. I find this headphone is more detailed, at least at with the Burson Conductor 1793 chip, than my HE 500. Instrument separation is better and the sound stage is wider. It's a pretty good listen on most genres, as I have tested it with acoustic, classical, jazz, funk, classic rock, alt rock and electronic, and it seems to do well at most of it. I tend to find it does worse at classical and acoustic because of the artificial nature of its overall presentation. It's still a REALLY fun listen though, especially with funk/disco music! I'm still really impressed with the quality of bass. I tend to prefer Denon/Fostex style of bass, but this is so well controlled and tight it's hard not to appreciate. It just NEVER gets out of control but provides weight when it's called for. The treble still bothers me a bit but not much, nothing like my old AH-D5000's did. Any criticism of the treble was probably a reaction to the initially high price point, at the current price its not that much of an offense. At $470, I feel it was a decent value, although IDK how it EVER sold for $1,000. I'm still not sure if I will actually keep it, or pass it on to the next person, but its not a bad headphone regardless of what anyone says.

I'm seriously considering getting the HD700. I understand it's the perfect balance between the HD650 and the HD800.
And I have just two questions before I buy them:

1. How is the HD700 for rock music? rock, blues, jazz, psychedelic rock, hard rock... etc.
2. How is the HD700 combined with the WooAudio WA7?

Thanks a lot in advance!
