Just another view of the HD700, HE500 and HD800 journey.
I thought I was pretty much done when I had the HD700 and then acquired the HE500. I spent a lot of time with tubes perfecting my HD700 system and found the magic with the Bifrost Uber/Lyr with Amperex Orange Globes. Enough so that I tracked down another par of OG's but they were not the same signature. I really loved the combo. Thought I needed another HP so I got the HE500. Bad move on my part. No matter how much I wanted to really like the HE500 and after tons of break in, the HD700 was getting 95% of my head time. Deeper and more extended bass, better mids and nice sparkling highs without the harshness. The OG's I had did the trick.
I tried the HD800 on may occasions and they were not for me.. until at the last Toronto HeadFi meet when I got a change to try the HD800 on my particular setup. The step up was as much the difference between the HE500 to HD700.. again, deeper and tighter bass, liquid mids that were to die for and a smooth extended treble with tons of air and space. Everything from Sinatra, Patricia Barber, Enigma to Lindsey Stirling and Deadmou5 was that much better. My HD700 and HE500 went up for sale the next day to fund the HD800. (I also really, really liked the HE6 but that was another story)
I'm thrilled with the HD800 and like Sonido, I'm working on that magic combo to take the HD800 to another level.
I've said it many times before.. I should have stopped with the HD700 and my magic BF/Lyr/OG combo.. but then there's HeadFi
Just my story, YMMV.
