Denon Officially Announces Its New Headphones!

The D7100 looks ugly IMO. Haha, what do I know, still new to head-fi. Wonder if there are any big changes compared to the D7000 though since the model number is 7100 instead of 8000.

I saw this post earlier in the thread, and I couldn't resist replying to it and others that are questions peoples' concern over aesthetics.

Believe it or not, some people who visit head-fi aren't audiophiles. Some people just like collecting headphones and audio equipment. That doesn't mean they're not into music as well, but rather that they don't prioritize fidelity to quite the extent of the audiophiliacs. I've seen plenty of threads criticizing these folks for caring about "fashion" and for being "fashionistas." That to me is quite the holier-than-thou attitude.

It's obvious people care about design enough for companies to try to milk that, for better or worse. Now if only they'd concern themselves with more tasteful design.... *ahem.*

I agree. I'm one of those that places a great deal of importance on the styling of a product. If it doesn't look good, it won't catch my attention/interest. Of course, performance can and might sway the mind, but what do I have to judge the new Denons right now, if not on looks/design alone?

In the future somewhere, when Denon actually allows someone to listen to these.

The AD600 (or something that looks like it, because at the Headphone Matsuri it wasn't given a model number) was at the Headphone Matsuri and was demoed, if you search on the web you can find impressions from the Japanese audiophiles.  Comfort is universally agreed to be excellent and better than the old D series, weight is very light and "almost can't feel it", so far the impressions universally agrees that they have the Denon house sound (leaning towards bass and easy listening) but more balanced than the bassy D5000, the bass is also tighter than the D5000, everyone seems to think that they sound better than the D5000, and some said it has a soundstage that is bigger than the D7000.  Overall I haven't seen one bad thing said of the sound of the new Denon in the Japanese sphere.

But who knows it could all be just PR and bias right.

Could be! I haven't seen any impressions of the D600 from a source whose ears I trust, so at this point my attitude toward how they sound is "wait and see." In the meantime, I will continue to avoid looking directly at pictures of the D600.

Hmmm.... A far cry from the prestige look of the d5-7000. The 7100 looks ok, the models under look terrible imo. If they sound as good they certainly will make sales whilst competing against the Beats crap. I can see where they're coming from - unfortunately not my market segment.

I had a quick audition of prototypes of the AH-D600 and AH-D7100 on Tuesday, and came away truly impressed. Unfortunately the source was limited (my iPhone playing lossless files of some reference tracks), but the headphones didn't seem to complain. These were described as being "98% there" in terms of voicing, so I think they were further along than what Jude heard. On my head, the comfort level was a few steps better than the older models, and I would say they are some of the most comfortable full-sized headphones I've ever worn. They fit around my ears perfectly, and felt substantial lighter than the old models. Tonally these are clearly less thick and warm sounding that the older models, with a lightness, speed and clarity I've never hear before from a Denon. The 600 has a little more of old warmth than the 1700, but it was never bloated sounding. Imaging was exceptional with pinpoint clarity.

I'll reserve further comment until I hear the production versions using better source components.

why do people here think they look bad ?

Its not so much about the design, but about the look of cheapness. For example, D5000 was made of real wood, magnesium and leather, which exuded quality when you held them in your hand, they felt and looked like a high quality product with great attention to detail and great finish.D600 looks like its made of cheap black plastics (i know its not cheap, but it looks that way) and something that looks like very fake pleather with poorly done white stitching that screams cheapness. 500$ headphones CANNOT look like that. If I pay 500$ for a pair of headphones, when I hold them in my hand and look at them, I want them to look and feel like 500$ headphones, not just sound like one. Denon went from producing headphones that looked like they were hand made to ...this. These are not times when manufacturers can afford to give customers one or another, looks or sound. Because there are plenty of headphones out there that offer both things. How can AKG make the K550 look so good and expensive for less money, and still have a sound that is way above their price tag?

But I understand that Denon clearly want's to attracts younger audience who now mostly waste their money on certain headphones we don't mention here.

I don't know if they are joking or not. The design clearly shows root to the dreaded Monster Beat, I much prefer the older ones. Now that D7000 might get discontinued soon, the demands on them might just bump the price up back to normal.
