Why do headphones that need an amp have 1/8th Inch Plug?

Why is it that headphones that need an amp quite often have an 1/8th inch Plug and a 1/4 inch adapter?

Why don't they have a 1/4 inch plug and an 1/8th inch adaptor? That way you wouldn't need the adapter to plug it into a headphone amp, thus reducing the possibility of lowering of sound quality through the adapter.

I never understood that. It's like the manufacturer is saying "plug it into your Discman" when in fact they need an amp.

The HD-650 has 1/4 plug with 1/8 adapter.

I dunno, mine have a 5 pin plug.

Some headphone amps take a 1/8th inch plug.

Well, the fact that micro, mini and style systems as well as tv sets mostly have 1/8 " headphone jacks may also play an important part here.

For the adaptation, straight single-piece adaptors are the usual solution - for these, 1/8 -> 1/4 " is better, because the other way round there might be to much torque on the smallish 1/8 " jack...
