First let me say hello. I am new here and this is my first post.

 Now for the problem,

I am looking to get some new cans. I have been pouring over forum posts in this and other forums for close to 6 months now and my head is spinning with all the info I have gleaned. Unfortunately I have picky ears due to growing up with a major audiophile in my father who would regularly spend 10k or more on home audio equipment in names like Audio Pro, Denon, Thorens, KEF etc. so my ears have developed a rather discerning taste in sound. I am a huge fan of clarity with full double drop kick to the chest bass with zero distortion but I love my highs too, just not when they sound like they are coming out of a tin pipe. I can't stand shake, rattle or pop in my ears. I need my sound to be accurate and powerful.

So now I find myself unable to decide on a new pair of cans and I need some help.

I listen to a rather eclectic array of music and I need a set of cans that can effortlessly go from Bocelli to cunninlinguists to Jimi Hendrix to Muddy Waters and back again with no distortion or weakness in the bass or highs that I can wear for extended periods. I would like to hear "bass power" without the mud and highs without the tin. I need my mids to be clear but not overbearing. My eq settings when I use them are usually set to peak just above the midline in the bass and treble with a slight valley in the mid freqs.

Why is this a problem? Because my budget is only $200us and I have nowhere to try before I buy since the nearest town is 150 miles away so my market is limited to the internet. I have read alot on "bass heavy" cans and frankly I'm wary due to the typical "muddy" sound bass enhanced cans can have as well as the typical loss in the mids and highs when compensating for the overwhelming bass. I know cans will never provide the "chest kick" that speakers can provide but I'd like to get as close as a set of cans can get to that without sacrificing the mids/highs.

I am grateful for any help you can provide.

So far my list has come down to this

Denon AH-D1100

Audio-Technica ATH-M50

Audio-Technica ATH-PRO700MK2

Ultrasone HFI-780

Are there any I am missing that would fit the bill here? If so please let me know. And what are your experiences with the above models?

Again thank you for all your help and please, be gentle lol

I like my 780's.They have a little bass boost but not a huge one and overall, a pretty well balanced set of cans. The bass isn't muddy but the highs can be a tad, just a tad, shrilly for some songs. That cools down though after a while and you can always eq them to get the sound you're looking for. I really like them. Much better than the m50's imo.

Consider waiting and buy the Denon D2000's

Thank you for your response. In the interest of accurate recommendations I must state that the $200usd budget is my ceiling. I live on a fixed income and though the Denon d2000's are probably suitable I cannot afford $350usd for my new cans. I am open to recommendations that I have not already listed but I simply cannot afford those :frowning2:, someday when I'm rich and famous maybe lol

You can get the denon d2000 new in the box from jr.com for the $210 shipped if you call in and ask for their best price. I have ordered two pair this way myself.

I called them and got them down to 220 with free shipping. Thank you for your help! Thought you should know though they are not going any lower than 220 per the manager. Nice people to work with!

Yea, they are pretty good. It's nice to know that you can negotiate with them. They will definitely be getting more of my business in the future!!
