well, i've been visitng this forum for a few months and it seems every couple weeks im picking up a new phone.

first it was sr80's, then portapros, then px200's, then an ipod

anyways, i find the px200's don't provid the kind of bass responce i would like (with the portapros, i can "feel" the bass instead of "sort of hear it" using the px200's) and i like that. same goes with the sr80's, but to a lesser extent.

isolation is key because i will be using them for my daily bus commute and in libraries etc.

portability/small ness would be nice too since i'd have to fold them and put them in my backpack, hopefully the in the side pouch where my books won't hit them.

i'd love to get a pair of canal phones, (the lower end ones, like e2c or er6) but i've heard that the bass with the small design is often very lacking. in this case, i will trade off some clarity and make compromises just to get some decent bass out of it. i just don't have the same feel for half the music i listen to. i haven't even put any techno on my ipod because i find myself constantly clicking "next track" since the px200 offer no feeling to the song

any suggestions?

Sounds like an e2c candidate to me. The ER-6 is more like trading off some bass for clarity

But yeah, my biggest problem with the PX200's was I just couldn't feel or get into the music with them...just too blah and unexciting. The Kosses are so much fun but they do leak... I haven't heard the e2c though so I can't really vouch for it for sure.

How do you feel about a foldable headphone that rests on your ears with decent isolation that sound fairly similar to portapros but with more treble? If it sounds interesting you could try the Senn HD25-1 if you can find it in a local shop for auditioning. That's based on my 20-25 mins audition, so it's just my first impression. Maybe owners of the HD25 can chime in.

Closed phones with good bass would be the Ultrasone HFI-700 (or 650, they're the same) DVD (not Trackmaster) or the Beyerdynamic DT700M (80 Ohms)...
You could also try one of the Sonys, some people seem to like them:
Sony V6 (equal to the 7506), Sony V700DJ, Sony 7509..

At least, as far as I know...

HeadRoom really likes the beyerdynamic dt 231... and they're relatively cheap, too... 59 bucks.

oh... but they're not foldable. they are fairly small though.

i've been looking for something similar, but it looks like the px200 is really the only portable closed option... oh, and px250.

Beyerdynamic DT250-80 have the best bass and run off the ipod nice, but not foldable or portable, depending on your def.

Sounds like they don't really make what you are looking for you are going to have a trade off somewhere. Most portiable phones lack bass a bit and don't isloate well. Canall phones do usally lack bass a bit. I would consider getting some med size phones like the dt250-80 with decent isloation for the library and home and maybe a cannall phone or keep the porta pros to travel with.

Some people have said they prefer the px-100 over the portapros and although they leak they don't leak as much as the Koss's. So you may want to ask an owner of them to see how bad they do leak or isolate.

I would definitely consider the E2's. IMO, they've got great slamming bass (well, for a canal phone) and are just an all around fun phone. While you don't physically feel the song, you do feel it nonetheless. These little phones have soul! The isolation is exactly what you want. I keep on sending people to this thread, but I think gsferrari did such a great job at summing up these phones.

i agree on that. i have the hfi-650 trackmaster version though. they are supposed to be a little bit more detailed and soundstage but the dvd version has more BASS. so if you want to use it as a portable headphones you won't be able to listen to all the details anyways and dvd edition might be better regarding sound (i definately like a punching bass in the subway but imo the trackmaster are good enough)
both headphones offer pretty good isolation and are foldable. i was able to test some sennheiser hd25-1 before. these are some nice headphones! but maybe a bit too expensive and not very comfortable. and the bass wasnt too big imo.
i havent been able to try any beyerdynamics but the dt250s are supposed to be good (but huge and not really stylish) and the sennheiser 280 pro (which i didnt like too much cause the headband presses too much on your head and they are huge as well).

you might also give the sennheiser px200s a try. well, i didnt like them (controversial topic anyway regarding the px200s).

but i personally like the ultrasones the best

oh yeah, if forgot to mention, i'd like them to stay in a reasonable budget, like 70 USD and under...

just wondering with teh canal phones, liek e2c, how often would i need to replace the foam tips or rubber tips? do you use them at the same time?

how long do they last for? anythign else i should know about them?

i was browsing shure faq but it doesn't mention longevity ...

and as i said i'd like them to be as small a possible, this is for portable, on the bus/in my backpack.

i use sr80's for home use.

I would echo the HD25-1, but one other choice could be the Sony MDR-V700DJ because they are exactly like uber-Portapros. They don't extend down as low as some, but it's enough and the impact is definitely there. Problems? They're quite vehemently disliked here (not wholly sure why, as many phones which people do like here are considerably worse) and they're heavy. They work quite well with the iPod.
