The back and forth in ear pads and loving / hating these phones is exhausting.

What I really want lately is some fresh tunes to enjoy!

It makes sense though, since earpads are the main weakness in Hifiman headphones, in terms of comfort and quality, and arguably of sound quality. Honestly, my HE500s get to a whole different level with the J$ beyer pads. The advantage that Audeze cans have (good earpads) can be dismissed.

Did you ever hear the quote?:     "I'd rather make $1.00 from each of one million people, rather than making one Million off of one person"

Alright alright, mark it up 50% then, if you are to do the screen mod for everyone lol. That is more than fair, and people won't all feel guilty.

Edit wait a sec you can't even do the mod for everyone, if you are to do the same thing I did, since you need the earpad mounting rings that are from original Hifiman earpads to glue any screen on. And I doubt people will be comfortable enough to ask you to superglue the fabric directly onto the precious last-production J$'s lol.

Btw so have you heard anything from Jeremy yet?

jerg goes to pleather, i go to velour. the tides turn yet again.

both are excellent at least we can agree, and for $10, it's great to either love the original more or have a different signature to get down with.

The pleather is definitely the underdog since velour I'd say is more popular amongst these crowds.

Loving the airiness of the velour right now. bursts of energy beaming in my eardrums.

How much are these J$ earpads? Would no filter suck?

does anyone else find the he400 to be incredibly non-fatiguing?  This is the first pair of headphones I have been able to listen to for hours and not have any fatigue.

Really? I find HE400 treble to be a bit too wild to be perfect, because of its fun sound signature. Everything is relative ofc, if your previous headphones were relatively much harsher in the treble then HE400's treble would seem butter smooth. I have the HE500 and HE400 side-by-side (again) right now and the treble smoothness difference is very apparent.

This is why I'm beginning to appreciate HE400 + pleathers now, because the pleathers attenuate the treble down.

Right now I don't think there are any J$'s left. Jeremy the owner of the J$ business shut the operation down 3 months ago and proceeded to sell all his last reserve stocks of earpads. Could be wrong though but don't bet on getting one. Also he is moving to Europe this coming week so there's a good chance he'll be incognito for a while too.

I'd suggest that you at least cut out a thin disc of foam to act as a dust filter screen. A more permanent solution would be to do what I did:

But that takes a bit of elbow grease.

I see, all the better now I don't have to be curious about maybe getting them :)

I dunno about fatiguing exactly, but I do find myself a bit sick of the exaggerated bass sometimes, despite reading about that being the reason I have a pair (and loving it for what it is with some music).  I just get sick of some music which I feel isn't supposed to be bassy being affected (imo badly) by the HE-400.

syrupy is a great way to describe pleather, whoever did.

velour remind me of a really amped up and cleaner version of my hd595

I actually feel HE400s still sound sufficiently clean and clear even with pleathers, because their bass and treble emphasis still breaks through the syrupy midrange that the pleathers create. With HE500s it's a different story, everything becomes syrupy and romanticized with pleathers, makes vocals sound extremely euphonic but makes the overall presentation a tad too slow to feel high-fidelity.

Hmm.   I find that sometimes the bass can be emphasized alittle more than I would like in relation to the mids and highs.  I mainly run into this problem on electronic/dubstep music though where those tracks already have emphasized bass.  some of the more bassy ones are unlistenable to me unless I turn the bass down on my amp, but thats more because the track has overemphasized bass to begin with

My most recent HP was the HE500 and I find the he400 to be less fatiguing than that.  Not sure why, as I do remember the HE500 having smoother treble.  maybe its the lesser bass presence or maybe that dip in the frequency curve.     Or maybe I'm listening more responsibly

I'm 90% sure that's why. Upper midrange is pretty fatiguing at loud volumes because it is where the "forwardness" and "aggressive bite" of the music is, and HE500s are fairly neutral so they have quite a bit of upper treble in the FR. HE400s despite the bass and treble emphasis, are dipped at the upper mids so even at very loud volumes, the forwardness glare you'd expect still won't be there.

I'd imagine pleather with a grill mod would be a great combo.

I am in love with these headphones again now that I've eliminated that weird amp noise issue.
