Never used the velours but the Focus A pads are way better than the pleather. Never found them fatiguing, listening to a wide range of genres, from super bass-thick doom to treble-blasted lo-fi black metal, I could listen for hours.

I use the velours during the summer as the leather tend to be too warm! To my ears the differences were not so big or, anyway, I didn't spent time in detecting them..
Can you link me which pads are you talking about? I think I will never find them here in Italy but if they outperform the standard leather pads I would like to give a look around!
I cant agree, if the audiophile recordings have this high frequencies it is annoying. It depends on the song.
Besides the trebble seems to "add" reverb (make it louder) for some songs.
(I use the velour pads)

These are the Focus-A Pad from HiFiMAN. I'll be receiving them with my HE-400 soon. The first time I owned the HE-400, I switched to velours immediately for comfort reasons (even though that didn't end up being enough) and also for best best. But by the time my head starting feeling tired from the discomfort of the feel, my ears had gotten tired of the treble as well. So, to me, yes, a bit fatiguing.

Beat me to it. Yeah I bought them for comfort but the sound is a bit different, better to my ears but I can't place exactly how as I made the switch and haven't looked back. Definitely tamed the treble a bit but I didn't pay attention to any other sonic changes.
The Focus pads are basically Hifimans iteration of jerg's modded pads. They are amazing on my HE560s and if they do anything like the job of the modded jergpads, then you will love them on the HE400 and wonder how you ever lived without them!
Did you ever try the 'modulor' modded jerpads that the user 'modulor' made for people last year? I have them on mine now and they are the sole reason for me not selling them! They're a hybrid pleather with a velour top stitched on. Holes cut out around the inside?
So, the jergs are better than the focus pads on the HE400 then? I've just ordered some Focus A pads to try out on my HE560 and if I preferred them, was going to try the Focus pads on my HE400, but I've done the tape mod and backvent mod on them, so it would mean dismantling that set up to do it. If you think the jergs are better than the focus on the HE400 I might just keep them there..
When you're done with optimization, share the E-Q file. I'm sure many will find it useful, myself included. I EQed the treble to remove the harshness, but I'm not exactly good at this sort of thing.
I believe, there is already a post somewhere in this thread for an EQ and settings. Not home right now, so I cannot provide a screen shot of my settings. I, generally, font bother to use it unless listening to Led Zeppelin and similar music.

I agree. I found the 400s very fatiguing and the sibilance distracting enough that I could not listen to them long term. The Jerg/modulor pads and a very open grill mod made all of the difference for me.
I did not listen to them for about a month after getting the 400i. When I put them on I realized that 90% of the things that aggravated me about them had been cured by the combination.
I think the Focus A pads are the closest to the Jerg mod pads.
Slowly but surely I've been upgrading the less appealing features of my HE-400s (pads, cable). Has anyone tried modding their HE-400s with one of these (http://www.audeze.com/lcd2-leather-headband-yoke) successfully?
