Sorry to refute you but this is simply not true. It fits right over the headband without any adjustment to the headband itself.

LOL! That is a plastic dragon head from the Double Dragon roller coaster gift shop at Universal Studios Orlando, FL. Makes for a pretty cool headband stand.

I think so. It adds a nice cushion to absorb more of the weight of the cans. Its worth the $12 investment as they work with quite a few of my cans

My HE-400's headband is rather thick. Wrapping the headband you posted (which I own) over the stock headband requires folding or a fair amount of squishing. I guess YMMV

Hmmm I didn't realize they made different headbands for them. Mine is definitely not thick and requires no manipulation whatsoever. I'll consider myself lucky as it really improves the comfort factor for me.

Orthos don't just sound like they are out of one basket, to be honest. Some shared traits include exceptionally layered instrument separation, a strong sense of tactility in the overall sound (not just bass), and different (not necessarily better or worse) somewhat speaker-like kind of soundstage layout.
 
But different orthos can have very different tonal balances and sound signatures.
 
Specifically in terms of HE400, expect a polite but detail-oriented sound signature with a ball-gripping bass.

My problem with the HD600s is that they sound...I don't know how to put this; flat? Not in terms of frequency, it feels like there is a sheet between me and the physical sounds. I've read them described as "veiled" before, is that kind of what I'm describing?
 
I do very much like the headphones, and honestly the comfort and appearance are both amazing. The marble-looking finish looks beautiful to me, and a part of what attracted me to them in the first place.

What genres do you listen to? What will you power it with?
 
HE-400
- more bass, deeper extended bass
- darker sig in general
- dipped upper mids, alleviated a bit by velours or try jergpads
- better imaging and separation than HD600
- faster speed - so better for complex taxing music
- widish soundstage that isn't super deep. About on par with HD600 from memory
- a bit of a treble awkwardness, can be sibilant at times, mods can fix this I believe
- heavy and uncomfortable to those with weaker necks/sensitivity to clamping (can be stretched or a pad added to headband)
- more detailed
- more exciting
 
HD600
- more laid back in sound
- warmer/tilted mids to add warmth
- rolled off in sub bass
- relaxed treble/not super extended
- slower overall speed (best suited with with genres not relying on complexity+speed)
- well rounded but average soundstage size
- very comfortable for me
- imaging is good but not fantastic

I'm talking 'polite' in a very specific sense. HE400s are not treble-polite, no, far from that; but they are polite in the upper midrange, so music will not sound forward or in your face.
 
It's very different from the 'flatness' you experience with HD600, which is a consequence of the Senn's dip in the mid-treble.

also the he 400 how is it different from the dt 880. not asking which is better but wondering if the two could compliment each other
