Hello! I've been using the ibasso D4 for some time now and would like to upgrade. I want a DAC/amp combo in the $300-$500 range. I haven't been on here in a while so whats the consensus for a desktop rig? I will just be hooking up to my PC. Thank you very much for the time and recommendations!

Any ideas? There's so much out there. I'd like to have an all in one unit. I mostly listen to heavy rock and metal but more subtle stuff such as bluegrass and folk also. Right now I have the ATH M50's and will probably upgrade those as well eventually. For now I want a really good sounding desktop DAC that hopefully has a headphone amp integrated. Obviously I'm looking for an upgrade over the D4. Thank you again.

HRT Music Streamer II ($199) and Matrix M-Stage ($299)? $500 in total and a great combo.

Yes, it's very significant. The D4 is a portable amp. It would be funny to compare it to the M-Stage.

What headphones are you planning on getting in the future? If it has low impedance or if it's a Sennheiser I'd get the Schiit Asgard over the M-Stage.

I'm open on that one as well. Budget is the same for headphones. I listen to mostly heavy rock and metal...additionally some bluegrass, folk, country as well. THEY HAVE to be closed cans though as I use them mostly at work. What would be my best option on a full setup given that information. Thanks so much!

Yup, Matrix M-Stage is good. Just go for that.

I'm a big fan of the Music Streamer II, but haven't heard the M-Stage. Personally for my home rig, I'm using the NuForce Icon HD which is a cheaper version of the HDP, the only difference being the lack of a couple inputs. It's an all-in-one unit, DAC + amp, which I'm more than happy with and works great with a computer setup. Sounds great and I can minimize the amount of cables and gear around my computer. Would still be a significant upgrade over D4 at a slightly lower entry cost than the HRT + M-Stage.

Thank you for the suggestion. I'm going to read up on the Icon Hd. I'm still trying to figure out what my best option for a headphone upgrade will be as well. I feel like I should figure that out before I decide on what amp to get. I always see people ask the question "What is the best headphone for X type of music?" I just want an all around good closed headphone as I listen to a wide array of music from metal to bluegrass to rock, country, etc.

Okay, after countless thread readings here and elsewhere this is what I've decided on. PLEASE tell me if you see a problem with this setup. I'm about 3 clicks away from just doing it.

Headphone choice: Denon AH-D5000
DAC: HRT streamer ii
Amp: Schiit Audio Asgard

Music: Mostly lossless via mediamonkey (windows 7)

You won't have any problems at all with that configuration.  I'm using a similar setup, and I really enjoy it.  I swapped a JDS Labs-built O2 amp for the Asgard in a comparison recently, and the O2 amp was a bit more detailed with a little less warmth.  If the O2 was made with higher quality inputs, I'd be using that over the Asgard in my home setup.  If the size and heat of the Asgard is an issue, you might want to look into saving some money and going for the O2.  It's a great match with the D5000.

Thanks though I'm slightly confused by that. The money difference isn't an issue to me so that being said which do you prefer just from the sound factor (it sounds like you prefer the O2 yet find issue with build quality)? Thanks so much.

I do prefer the O2 sound ever so slightly.  With no way for me to properly ABX the 2 amps, it's really difficult to make any solid recommendation of one over the other with any degree of confidence.  The build quality of the O2 from JDS Labs is wonderful, but the device itself is cheap.  All of the connections are on the front panel, including the power, input, and output; which makes things cluttered and more difficult to manage.  The input and headphone jacks are 1/8" and they are not rated particularly high with regards to the number of insertions they can handle.  It's built superbly, but it's fundamentally designed to be inexpensive, and this shows.  When the new ODA version is available, I am going to see if I can pay extra for better headphone and input connectors.

The Asgard has the RCA inputs in the back, a full-sized 1/4" headphone jack in the front, and the volume knob is much larger and easier to fine tune to an ideal listening level.  It's like a tank, and the build quality is equally great. I highly recommend both amps.

Pure sound quality: O2 barely outguns the Asgard in my opinion, and most notably at high volume levels, but still not an overwhelmingly obvious improvement.

Build quality: Asgard has an advantage when compared to the much smaller, lighter, and seemingly cheaper components used with the O2

Again, if you can benefit from a much more compact amp, the O2 sounds as good or better to my ears than the Asgard with my Denon D5000.  That said, the Asgard is an awesome value, I still use it as my main amp for home, with the O2 serving duty as my amp of choice in my office where I work.

Much appreciated. I'm a big tank fan so I'll go with asgard. Don't plan on moving it around at all and like the idea of cleaner connectivity. Many thanks! I expect to be awestruck moving from my athm50's and the Ibasso D4 :)
