Hi Drew,

A few questions:

Is this Dac Xmos based?

Can upsampling be turned off?

Can the outputs be used as fixed outputs or only variable preamp ones?

Is there a manual in PDF available?

Thanks.

Yes it is Xmos based. SABRE32 Reference 32-bit Stereo Audio DAC.

Upsampling can not be turned off.

The unit has both output and headphone output sensitivity options.

By placing the volume control at max it is in fixed mode. Details can be found HERE. Although the paper has not been updated to the 32bit version.

Manual Here

Fantastic device. Still Burning in. Will be taking to CanJam in Charlotte

Thank you for the answers, my other Dac has the same fixed level mode so I'm familiar with it.

Could be a nice addition to my setup, I'll have a look into the manual.

I'll post a link to here in the other Wadia thread, some people were asking for more info on the chips used.

I believe a separate upgraded power supply is coming as well according to what I was able to find on the web?

EDIT: Getting a little confused about the power supply after reading the manual.

Does the 121 still use 12V input with a wallwart (that can be upgraded) or does it take 110V directly now?

And what about 220V?

It is still an external switching power supply like the iTransports. Not sure about an external Power Supply from Wadia. But we can get an external Cary Audio Power Supply. It will be similar to this but with different connector for the Wadia:

As I play with the 121 I will post more info here.

Any comments about the 121 as a headphone amp? I love Wadia products (I have the 27 DAC and 20 transport) so I am interested in this little piece for my nightstand system potentially to replace the V200.

I'm curious about the headphone amp too.
In the original specs from a year or two ago they said the amp section was going to be from ray Samuels.
The final specs seem to omit this language.
Did that deal fall apart?

It is very clean and detailed, very nice sounding. But does not have a huge amount of gain. It has no problem with phones like the Senn HD650 or such as long as you dont listen to it at extreme volumes. It wont drive phones like the Hifiman HE-6. I plan to try a bunch of different phones this week. My guess is it is fine with all phones except the low efficiency headphones. I also plan to try my JH and UE IEMs since it has a mini jack.

Thanks Drew. I am particularly interested in its sound with the T70, T1 and DX1000.

Just rocked out to a few songs with the T1. Plenty of gain. Especially once you read the manual and find out there is a way to change for high impedance phones via a remote combination of key strokes:)

On Una' " Angels at my Door" there was plenty of bottom end weight. The bass was strong with tons of impact. It did not deflate under the weight of the notes. This track also has a bunch of high frequency hash that can tell you how well an amp can keep from breaking up. I don't have the DX1000 so cant demo this. I would say the T70 would be similar since it shares the Tesla signature.

Thanksfor the information Drew.

Drew:

How does the Wadia 121 sound with the UE IEMs?  I have the UE Reference Monitors and am looking for a single unit desktop solution.  The Sabre dacs typically have great detail, but can be a little thin/light on body/weight.  How does Wadia's implementation compare (particularly with the UEs)?  Thanks!

Sorry for delay. My demo unit sold at the last Headfi meet and all the units that come in leave the same day. So I cant comment on this yet. I'm sure I will try this in the future.
