I want i more high end headphone that can keep  up with my musical needs, i listen to alternative and metal. I was looking a the HD650's and wondering if they were a good choice, i also want a portable amp and not a desktop one, i am willing to spend up to 250 on a amp.

I would put you more towards:

Beyer DT770 & DT990
Ultrasone HFI 2400
Audio Technica A900X
Denon D5000

Powered on a Fiio E11.

Very best,

What, no Grado in that list?  The OP did specify alternative and metal....

He stated he was considering the HD650. That's a headphone that is the polar opposite of a Grado in every way. It's comfortable, bassy & warm and has very dim smooth treble. Doesn't sound like someone who wants a Grado.

Do you have anything to contribute or are you just copy & pasting "Grado" because you saw the word "metal" ?

Very best,

LOL.  It just seemed (to me) to be an obvious omission from an otherwise concise list for the requested genres.  The OP didn't state any reasons as to why the HD650's were selected, nor what characteristics were being sought, only that something higher end than the Ultrasone 550 that isn't fitting the quality sought for alt & metal listening selections.  If the OP said "I want a dark, lush headphone with a prominent midbass, are there any suggestions that would do better than HD650?" I most certainly would not have suggested Grado.  Since the sound signature was not mentioned, and the request was only one of being uncertain of ability of those cans to fulfill the need, it seems fitting to suggest everything that would suit that music well, not just 650-like warm/dark/smooth phones.

My personal opinion on HD650 is that it's my favorite set of cans, and I do enjoy their sound signature for everything, including rock & metal, but if I were listening primarily to rock & metal, I'm not sure it would be my first choice.

Given what the OP really asked, in the absense of sound profile prerequisites, Grado's would be a worthy option to consider.  They would also not be my first choice, personally.  But they're an obvious contender to include.

I think that you would most likely be very happy with the HD650..... It is a very good all rounder pair of headphones.

Also Malveux I was just wondering.... Are you sure that you have enough pairs of headphones? Looks to me like you could do with some more pairs there as you don't really have much variety.... You only have 34 pairs there and I would say you need at least 100 seperate pairs tbh. lol

OP, what is it exactly about the HD650 that initially attracted you to it (e.g. dark, non-sibilant)? I think we can give you much more helpful suggestions if we know that first.

I just found an article on it and i looked it up, it was in a good price range and i didn't need to spend 1000 dollars on a desktop amplifier. They problem with my ultrasones is that they distort very easily with metal and heavy metal. My friend suggested the hifiman range but there top of the range ones require lots of amping i have been told...

If your primary genres are hard rock/metal then I would not go HD-650s.  Not that they wouldn't sound good, but they wouldn't be my first choice for those genres.

I think it depends on the kind of metal, too.  I listen to a lot of doom, drone, and otherwise down-tuned metal and the 650s sounded great to me.  But then I also have some grindcore, crust, thrash, etc. and it sounds great too.

I didn't really have anything else to compare it with at the time, though.  So, a caveat.

Buy these type i mean the more high end headphones such as d5000 or HD650, and yes ones that would be good for metal. So i need a protable amp that can power the high end headphones i was thinking about the E17
