Headphone Upgrade: HD600 vs K701

The death of common sense raises its head once (or was it more) again.

Of course we all have the same bodies, the ability to do everything exactly the same way and at the same level.  We all have the same uncorrected vision.  Our physical (not to mention mental) abilities are the same at 21 as they are at 41, 51 and 61.

Further when it comes to a product...say a car...we all like the same thing, right?!  Everybody wants that small, sleek, fast sports car that lets you feel the road at all times.  No one wants the big one that provides the large trunk and the comfortable ride from sun up to sun down.  No one wants the one that sacrifices almost everything, including what used to be in your wallet, for gas/electric mileage.  No one wants the one built like a tank that will pull a boat or travel trailer.

Yes sirree..we're all made (and stay) the same and we all like exactly the same thing.

you guys get really heated sometimes, and dramatic!

just wading in with an analogy: 2 cars are racing, one has a faster engine, one has better handling. which is faster? its a stupid question, because one driver might prefer pure power for the straights, another might want better handling for the corners.
same with headphones; one person might want toe tapping easy listening music while another might want a cold analytical reproduction of the recording. i dont like the HD600 very much. does that mean its a bad headphone? no, it means i find the bass too slow for my personal taste and so i dont like it. some people find the AKG too bright and analytical or lacking in bass and some people love it for all those reasons.

if everyone used only "the best" product we would all be driving the same cars, wearing the same clothes, using the same phones and wearing the same headphones. its personal choice which determines "best". graphs and reviews will give you an idea, but as always, Your Mileage May Vary.

And that's exactly my point. You're (unfortunately) probably in a minority of knowing what you're really looking for though.

Also, that graph is the stuff of nightmares.

You think that's bad, check this one out. Yikes! Thankfully I did not see the KNS-8400 graph on Headroom's site before buying it.

That's a good analogy....graphs and objective facts will only get you so far....and can be totally misleading....there's much more to the enjoyment of music than can be represented by scientific facts and graphs. There was a lot of talk on one website about Sufjan Stevens who used k240 headphones to mix one of his albums....and some relatively cheap equipment(compared to a pro studio) to do the recording. Everybody knows you're not supposed to use headphones for mixing. Anyway it turned out to be a big seller.

It's...it's...it's so horrible. What has been seen, cannot be unseen.

EDIT-
So after thinking this over a bit more, I've got a kind of curious question - perhaps these are the kinds of headphones that Beats looked at and targets with it's marketing campaign. I mean (and just go with me on this), the Beats Pro (and even the Studio) measure flatter than these, and I'm guessing their CSDs probably look better too. They also weigh less (last I heard the MV1 tips the scales at over 500g). I'm not saying that makes either headphone a "good buy" - but if you consider the Beats (at $300 or $400) in context of these at $200, it at least makes more sense. And yes, both sides should be ashamed, and I'm really blown away that Koss (which produces the absolutely amazing ESP line) can manage to make something so scary.
