An audiophile and petrolhead's journal: Buckle up!

As I recall (I could be wrong) The Volt can run 100% on electric (the gas motor is not running at all) until the batteries are exhausted, then it can run 100% on the gas motor. So, if your commute is short, you could run entirely on electric, then plug-in when you get home and theoretically never need gas - but, unlike a pure electric (like the Leaf), the gas motor is there if you need it. Of course, the problem is that you only get a range of 25-50 miles in the Volt on pure electric. That doesn't even get me to work in the morning!

I think that - for most commutes - people probably won't see that happening right?

OMGWTFWHY?!?!  :confused_face(1):   Now you're just bored...  :p

That's my guess, too.....one of those two. While technically they are indeed hybrids, they weren't exactly what I had in mind when I joked about Magick getting a hybrid. I was thinking more along the lines of a Prius, Volt, Honda Insight, that type of thing...lol.

The 918 Magick or the LaFerrari?

The LaFerrari, I've already ordered it (made deposit and everything, chassis #444). I mentioned it here a couple months ago but it was likely missed. That's as close to a hybrid as I want to get.

Late to order were you?

Just out of curiosity did you look into the F1 rental programme?

Not too late, just low on the list, based on their "loyalty" program. It means I have to wait a few months longer, not a biggie.

I don't really like renting anything, unless it's something I know I'll only use once. Also they're cool, but F1-style cars are more like modern torture devices than a real vehicle. It just isn't fun to get kidney punched and shaken mercilessly for an hour. It's simply too raw and my body can't take the pounding.

I was going to talk about this at some point, but I'll touch on it a little now. On the other end of the scale, after trying a bunch of sports cars, I've noticed there are right ways to do things and there are wrong ways. Right way to do TC & ESC = Porsche and Ferrari ("we'll assist you, but pay attention"), Wrong way = McLaren, Nissan, and Lamborghini ("we're doing it all, just chill"). Of course, right now you can turn most of that stuff off, but rumor has it you can't do that in the P1. So it becomes a $2.5M amusement park ride? Yuck, no thanks.

Heading out for a while, I need some air and space.

Difference between driver and passenger. You own the McLaren, you know how the Mercury astronauts felt

Having a high profile celebrity wrap their sports car around a telephone pole is bad PR... :p

It's not all that, really. While being a great car, it is a little raw for most folks. Transmission isn't smooth, no servo-assist brakes, no PS, and the steering is decidedly twitchy. Those don't take away from the experience for me, just things that a person needs to keep in mind when driving. It took a half hour to adjust and now it's a lot more satisfying than just about anything else I've driven, in fact it's the only non-hydraulic clutch I've ever used that isn't like doing leg-presses. They really sat down and planned the car out, working out clever mechanical ways to make the car usable without just going to assisting devices, and that makes it brilliant. Now it has A/C too, and while it won't freeze anyone out, driving it is a lot more comfortable. It isn't the last word in driving and I'd really hate to get stuck in rush hour traffic in it. One, because it's hard for other drivers to see due to being so low to the ground, so you worry that someone's just going to plow over you. And two, due to the outrageously fast throttle response, it tends to lurch at low speeds. However, that's like someone saying Jesus was a second-rate carpenter. Who cares?

You really need to have has some seat time in a race vehicle of some sort before you get into something like that or its like. Brutal power unfiltered by road car amenities is not something most people are prepared for.

For those in the cheap seats a Lotus 7 kit with a decent powerplant will give some idea of the quality of experience.

Now if you could get a vintage 917 happening...... I had heard long ago there was one registered in Georgia or Alabama . That had masochist written all over it.

The 917 Dauer, a timeless classic.

Truth be known. There is a Lancia Stratos exact replica kit that could almost get me to entertain the idea of a high perf car again. Almost. That car was pure sexiness and evil all in one package.

No, but I know where I can score a Dauer 962 LM, ready for road conversion. Right now we're shopping a 90% complete Mosler MT900S project and a 2005 Carrera GT w/ 1800mi. I've bought from the place selling the Porsche before, that's where my Ford GT came from, so we're just haggling over price.

Do they narrow the 962? trackside that beast topped 80 inches in width which would make for some interesting manouvering in town.

The Mosler always reminds me of the Group44 Jag XJR5 before they uglified it into the XJR6. Beautiful lines.

I get the Carrera GT as a collectible but do not really see the appeal otherwise. Can you clue me in a little. As an aside I love the Zuffenhausen brigades racing efforts but the road cars never really did it for me, so I'm no Porschephile.

You have the Ford GT and are worried about bing overrrun in the Macca? Thank god you didn't shoot the bolt for the GT40 then

Only one thing justifies the appeal of the CGT. Its amazing, bewitching, entoxicating V10 engine sound.

And also the fact that it is one of Porsche's last made for serious drivers supercar before the electronics took over. It has a manual you know.

Now thats how out of the game I am. I was idling along assuming that 6 or 7 speed standard trannys were still available on all high perf vehicles.
