As I recall (I could be wrong) The Volt can run 100% on electric (the gas motor is not running at all) until the batteries are exhausted, then it can run 100% on the gas motor. So, if your commute is short, you could run entirely on electric, then plug-in when you get home and theoretically never need gas - but, unlike a pure electric (like the Leaf), the gas motor is there if you need it. Of course, the problem is that you only get a range of 25-50 miles in the Volt on pure electric. That doesn't even get me to work in the morning!
