so every over ear headphone i have tried thus far touches my ears, my ears stick out more than normal, and the hard cartillage near the very back or the aurear sticks out and touches my ears, i want headphones that do not touch your ears. it would also be nice if they can stay off my ear lobes. to date the only truly comfortable headphones i have worn is the bose AE2, but i dislike what you get for the bass, i like my music a little bass heavy. can anybody measure the depth of their ath-m50's and also measure the hight of the opening. also if anyone feels they have some deep cans info on them is good, but my price point is about 150 max

How deep they are depends on the pads. I've seen people use non-standard pads on them that are a lot deeper. Maybe that's something you should investigate. I have a set of M50s but they're currently sitting on my counter pad-less until my new ones show up.

The ATH M50 are not technically "over ear' headphones.

They are "on ear" headphones = "supraaural" headphones,
designed to rest on the ears.

Sounds like you're wanting "around the ear" headphones = "circumaural" headphones,
designed to actually rest against your head with the ears inside the earcups.

Some examples: AKG 701, Beyerdynamic DT880.

Not a true circumaural to me either.  They do go around your ears, but the fit is extremely tight, and fabric is resting on your ears, while the pads go behind your ears as well.  It's not a very natural feeling at all.  Every other circumaural I've tried from the likes of Beyer, Sennheiser, Denon etc have went over the ear and only touched my head.  M50 is just a cramped mess.

Mine did not rest on my ears although it was tight around the edge. If you could find a used pair of Denon d2000 they are SUPER room and comfortable. Good luck!!

You must have gigantic ears, the M50 is definitely over ear/circumaural. It even says on the Audio Technica website.

I respect Audio Technica, but I think it's really inappropriate / misleading to describe the ATH M50 as circumaural.
Unless ones' ears are very, very small indeed they will not fit inside those earcups.

No comparison in size with truly circumaural closed cans like the AKG K550, for example.

I must have very very small ears indeed.

I don't think you'd like the M50s because I have that exact problem. I can't use them for more than 2 hours because it puts all of the clamping force on one side of my ears and it hurts. I'm going to replace the pads with Shure 940s and see how I like them. I don't care if it affects SQ slightly.

it looks like my ears are not fit for any good over ears(in my price range), time to look for some in ear headphones with some good bass response and either removable cables or a good warranty service.
