Hey everyone,

I am looking to buy a pair of headphones which are excellent for isolation. I already own some IEMs which are excellent but am looking for a paid of full size headphones that I can use as well.

Portability is not a factor as I will use them at home and will not be carrying them around, my two main factors are isolation (number 1) and comfort (number 2). I will be watching TV and movies using them as well as listening to music. TV will be my primary focus so audio quality isn't a big necessity just a bonus.

My budget is approximately $100 - $300. Currently I am looking at the following:

  • Senneheiser HD 280 Pro
  • Beyerdynamic DT 770

Does anyone have any opinions or advice on this?

Thanks.

Don't get the HD 280 Pro if you can have a $300 budget, there are much better options out there.

The DT770 fits the bill nicely, although I don't like their sound.

Shure SRH840 is another option.

Thank you both for the quick feedback.

The dt770 are pretty good. Comfortable and I use them for drums so isolation should be good too

This may sound like a dumb question so forgive the noobness, I am just wondering how much of the drumming the headphones cut out in your experience. I ask because my neighbours have a tendency to bang about so I assume that the type of sound is similar (n00b alert ).

Thank you very much I will also check out the Shure SRH840, this may go over my head but may I also enquire as to why you do not like the sound from those headphones? Is there any particular reason?

Thanks again.

Is it the "Pro" edition of the DT 770's you are thinking of? They are a great pair of headphones. Isolate extremely well, and are very comfortable. Pretty much exactly what you are looking for, with the bonus of being fantastic sounding!

I would add the Ultrasone HFI-780 for around $150.  Very good sound and extremely good isolation.  If you have a big head, I would scratch off the Sennheiser HD280.

I enjoyed my Shure for quite a long time before I sold them. I just didn't like the DT-770. They sound a little too, I don't know, "hollow?", a bit dry for my taste.

yes yes i have only tried the pro one.. didnt know they isolate differently. They isolate enough that i can still hear what i am playing. i dont think anything isolates well enough to completely rid of your neighbours. The shure headphone is a little uncomfortable to me and i dont really know how they sound.

The Sennheiser HD25-1 II are well regarded for their capability for noise isolation, even while "only" being on-ear headphones. I would also agree that the SRH840 are a worthy choice. I think the Audio Technica ATH-M50 do a fair job at isolation, also, but I prefer the sound of the former two.

Thanks very much for all your feedback so far I will keep looking into this, for now I am using =913&graphID[]=713&graphID[]=513&graphID[]=113]this website to compare the isolation of each pair. The Shure's, Sennheiser 25 and Beyerdynamics all look great candidates.

The DT 770 Pro seems to come in a few flavours, 80 ohms, 250 ohms etc. etc. Anyone have any insight into this?

Thanks.

The 80 ohm version is, of course, easier to drive. Other than that, I've heard people say the 250 ohm version is slightly more refined, but not a total departure from the 80 ohm version.
