So I decided to see how well 250-Ohm headphones work with the Xonar DG (in someone else's computer)
Tried both the Beyerdynamic DT770 Pro 250-Ohm and DT990 Pro 250-Ohm
They do work.
Can not really get super loud, but with all volumes maxed out you can watch movies and hear everything fine in what I would call normal listening level.
I've been watching Star Wars A New Hope, the newer remastered version on DVD. Using Media Player Classic Home Edition.
Listened to six headphones
DT990-250
DT770-250
DT770-80
HD558
KNS 8400
SR850C
All six headphones were about the same sound level with everything maxed out
Out of the six headphones, I think the HD558s sounded the best for vocals (still good with everything else) and the DT990 has better "theater" sound for the action.
I know this Xonar DG is being pushed to it's limits, My Yamaha RX-V671 receiver back home can more easily power the DT990 and the DT990 really good with Blu-ray.
If anyone has a 250-Ohm headphone, I would recommend something better then the Xonar DG to power them, but it's nice to know the DG will do in a pinch.
Tomorrow I might try the same Star Wars A New Hope DVD in my Blu-ray player (with Yamaha RX-V671), see what improves.

P.S. first time I noticed the sound of C3POs feet on the sand.

The Xonar ST/X will work, it just you might need to roll out the two generic Jrcs if you don't like their sound signature. I seen couple of Xonar STXs being sold for $159 on amazon.

I do have the Essence STX (w/LME49860NAs), I though I would just see how well the Xonar DG pairs with 250-Ohm headphones.

I would suggest an amplifier, as you are probably losing some of the sound quality from not having enough gain for the higher impedance headphones.

I was not looking at improving the sound from the Xonar DG, just testing it's limits.

I do not know how they compare to the DG, but the D1/DX are not bad for these headphones, other than having 100 Ohm output impedance that does change the bass response slightly. Of course, these do not allow for very loud sound either, but the quality remains good with low distortion even at 100% volume (which I would normally not use, though).

I bought my Beyer DT770 Pro 250-Ohm back when I was using the Xonar DX, max volume wise the DT770 was around 3 for a 1 to 10 scale
With the DG the DT770 the max volume is about 5 (1 to 10).
