battery problems with ipods?

Hi guys... im new to the portable audio world and have my eye on a 15gig ipod. However... a friend was telling me that its a three year investment becuase the battery will die and then they are worthless? Is this accurate? Thanks!

PS... I tried a search for this with no luck... Sorry if it has been discussed...
