Hi All,
M planning to get a portable AUDIO player. I will prefer SQ over any other features(video, apps etc.). Need advice. right now m torn between cowon iAudio i10 or sony walkman nwz-845/844.
Appreciate the help. Please suggest me on basis of sound quality only.
Supplied earphones can also be rated.

I have a Cowon i9 and the sound is fantastic but the UI is clunky, the UI may have been improved with the i10, I have heard the Sony's also produce excellent sound and have a better UI and it also depends where you are. If you are in Europe don't get the Sony's as they have enforced the EU volume cap and it's impossible or difficult to remove, with a Cowon you can remove the EU volume cap by choosing "rest of the world" or "outside of Europe" when you turn on the device for the first time, if you missed that option you can remove the EU volume cap by deleting the PARAM.CFG file and turning on the device and choosing the relevant option. My advice is to go and try them out if you can.

Edit 9/3/2012:

I tried the Sony NWZA865W in a Sony store and to see if there is a voume cap, if you go into common settings it says that the volume cap is off which is interesting.

I've had a J3 for some time now and love it. The sound quality is much better than anything I've owned so far, it's light and the battery life is remarkable... The expansion card slot means storage is unlikely to be much of a problem for music.

Don't go for the J3 if video is important to you though, there is better kit out there...

The files I'm using are all flac. And the in ear phones are Nuforce NE-700X. I have not been able to compare Cowon i10 with other portable gear. But I have a decent speaker setup, and I used to have a decent headphone setup as well (sold it last week though). So I have the chance to hear music through other gear.

I also tried, just for fun, to connect to Nuforce IEM's to my headphone amplifer, and even that made them bloom a little. But only a little. These IEM's are far from satisfying, but that is just my preference. The bass is quite bloated, and sounds in general are quite heavily compressed with lacking of transients/details.

I listen to music these days mainly on my i9 or using my laptop, Lenovo T420, but the sound card is so bad when you turn the volume up the sound is heavily distorted...sounds broken.

In comparison to my other mp3 players like the Sansa Fuze, and Sony S764, and Meizu M8,  i9 actually stands out.

I listen to mainly more bass heavy music and also a lot of jazz. I personally like the bass created by the i9. I don't find amping it out of the headphone jack of the i9 makes a lot of difference to me (this is by memory, i returmed the amps after trying them out) But I do notice that having a different IEMs changes a lot of how the music is presented.

For Jazz I tend to use more MMDTrumpet, IE8 or TF10 sometimes UM3.
For pop and others, it could be great ranging from ATH-CKS77 to M6 or anything that gives you a good bass.

I'd just push it a bit and get a Cowon J3. Great sound.
