Fostex TH900 Impressions & Discussion Thread

Recently I also bought th900. I also own k812 and few people compare these two as one is open back and one is closed back. The mid-bass is noticeably stronger than k812 (>10%) and the bass decays quite fast and not much sub-bass. I feel more sub-bass in k812.

The th900 has v-shape characteristic, for some jazz trio music which I usually listen to, when tuning to the suitable piano sound, th900 will produce a very v shape sound, which I think for instrumental music th900 is more attractive than k812 at first stance, and obviously there is more fun. But for prolong using you may feel th900 is a bit colored and not as balanced as k812, also I feel a bit more natural listening for k812 open back signature. k812 is more comfortable for wearing and prolong listening.

I like bass punch and I still being much attached to the bass fun of th900, but seems I cannot let go k812.

Mind describing the hugo?  It looks so good.

At this point for me (used it for 3 days), it is mostly like a portable battery operated Grace M903 DAC that can drive heavy loads like an Audeze LCD3, Sennheiser HD800 for a flight to London from New York.  It can also drive 2 orther headphones like Momentum 2 wired and Bose QC25 simulataneously as the Hugo has 3 phone ports.  It does not get too hot doing so.  It will be harsh on bad recordings like any high end equipment.  With the good ones, it can sound as smooth as a fine tubes amp.  The soundstage is massive, vocals are 3D, instruments are clearly defined.
Used the optical and USB 24/192 inputs so far.  It has other inputs and a RCA output so it can be your home DAC as well.
So far, all good.

It's these inconsistent impressions about the TH900's bass that really worries me and why I went with the TH600 (which apparently has 'less' bass, yet what i hear is absolute thunder down low (which I love). So which is it? Is the sub bass lacking on the TH900 or is it not?

When I think of sub bass, I'm talking about 30-50hz range (and obviously lower, but I put the most importance in the bass in those ranges.)

The TH600 goes super deep (clearly in the mix even at 25hz). If the TH900 isn't as present down there as the TH600, then yes, that is problematic for me.

I cant measure the frequency but using a Plenue P1 with machbass turned on, listening to Bass Dimensions - Bass Check 3 goes pretty down low. Its cheating a bit because I have the eq on and machbass gives pretty much any headphone deep bass, including the bass shy hd650. The funny thing is, by using an amp with bass boost, using both the bass boost and machbass gives the hd650 a quantity of bass while remaining crystal clear.

Comparing the JVC SZ2000 (rated as number 1 as a bass cannon) it seems to me that the TH900 goes down lower listening to the same track listed above however the JVC seems to be a little louder even after trying to match the volume. Id take the bass on the TH900 first, then the hd650 second with double bass on. The JVC falls much below.

I wouldn't have thought so. I don't know how people can hear so differently.

Both the D7000 and TH600 are absolute sub bass monsters. I wouldn't expect any different with the TH900.

I honestly laughed out loud when I was testing the TH600. I've heard so many impressions stating the bass was a bit reigned in, and it was more neutral sounding. What I've heard and felt was... BOOM, THUNDER, RUMBLE on my fave tracks and video games. I was so pleased that these people were 100% wrong. I think people focus too much on mid bass, and I guess that's where the direct impact may be not as strong as some mid bass heavy headphones.
