Fostex TH900 Impressions & Discussion Thread

I ended up going with the Burson Soloist + Gungnir combo. Crossing my fingers but I've read in multiple places that it pairs beautifully with the th900 as well as any audeze headphones because of its low impendance output. People swear by the Soloist + TH900....It was between that and the violectric v200

 Congrats on a wise choice.

I have always enjoyed the Soloist  / 900 combo.

I actually think the TH 900 has become an entire stable replacer for me! I first sold the LA 7000 Lite in order to afford them, and now I feel as though the HD 700 and HE 500 don't bring enough beyond what the TH 900 does to justify keeping them! Thats 2 headphones sold so far and Im planning on selling another one. I didnt count on the TH 900 being such a great all rounder. The musicality this headphone overs even transfers over well into classical. The LA 7000 Lite used to be my go to can for electronic, the HD 700 was for rock and funk, the HE 500 was for classical, rock, and jazz....but I feel like the TH 900 adequately fills all of those roles enough to make me want to sell them. I cant say how happy I am with this purchase and I am stoked to show off this pairing (Burson conductor SL) at my next head-fi meet. HD 800's are next on my list, as I heard a great (and affordable) setup that offers a lot the TH 900 doesnt, and will become a complimentary phone. IDK, im exploring my options....I may even go for the Ether, as it really impressed me at the Nashville head-fi meet.

@cheebamaster - let us know how it goes

FANTASTIC combo. The Soloist seems to pair fantastically with the Gungnir. A world of a difference compared to using the HDVA600. The sennheisers also sound way betteer although I still prefer the fostex.

The harsh treble is gone, base hits really energetically. COMPLETELY different sound. Very happy with soloist and TH900.

Hey Guys, been running my TH-900s out of a dB Labs Tranq DAC > Gilmore lite for 2 ish years now, sound signature is a little dry and impersonal.

Purchased a ifi Micro iDSD, sound alright, but not different enough to make me want to keep it.

Really want to try some tubes, add some warmth.

Anyone got any tube amp recommendations? (WA7 seems like im paying for a DAC I wont use and ZDSE is a little out of my price range)

I very late in responding to this post, but it may still help others that are searching for a tube amp to pair with our awesome TH-900s.

I am currently using the iFi Micro iDSD as my desktop DAC, and recently bought a used Musical Fidelity X-Can V8 amp.  I am absolutely loving this combination!!  The X-Can’s output impedance is just 2 Ohms, considerably lower than many amps.  So it should play nicely with low ohm headphones like the TH-900 and Grados.

I only had it a couple of days and decided to upgrade the tubes and the PSU.  I bought some matched Russian tubes and the "Little Pinky" SE from Mike at Rock Grotto, also known as Pink Floyd.  I've had  great experiences with the Mike and his Little Pinky, having owned two of them that I used with the MF X-Can V2 and V3, several years ago.  Mike made a large purchase of NOS 6N23P-EB military grade tubes with chrome pins. They're branded Voskhod 6H23N (Rocket Logo) which were made in the Kaluga plant / Russia.  I've never heard of them, but they sure sound good.

As most of you may know, the MF X-Can V8 isn't made anymore, but do come up on Audiogon every once in a while.  MF also made a separate power supply for it, but they're even more rare.  So for just a tick under $600 with the mods, I've got a great tube amp that pairs very well with my 900s.  Even the Shure 846 sound pretty good on this amp.

I've cycled through a few amps trying to find a good match for the Fostex, which are my favorite cans.  So far I've tried it with the Burson Conductor, CEntrance M8 and Fostex HP-8, and to my ears this is the best combination by far.  This thing has gobs of power, most of listening has the volume dial just below 9:00, with 11:00 the absolute max with the right recordings.  It packs quite a punch, with hard hitting bass and clean highs.  It's hard to wipe the smile off my face, I love these phones even more now!

I should add that this is just my opinion based on my ears, playing my kind of music on my system....YMMV!

Happy Motoring!

Down the line I can see myself getting a planar magnetic and the soloist with 4w output should be able to handle even a LCD-3. Hopefully good pick, certainly should be better on those headphones than the high impendance hdva600 by senn

Soloist is a great amp with TH900. I got the conductor (same amp as Soloist) and I'm very happy with them!

Spent a lot of time listening to these with my woo wa6. I'm considering selling the woo, I want it for the wrong reasons, it just looks beautiful. I prefer the sound signature of my portable Cayin C5.

I've wanted a tube amp for a while so I'm happy I purchased it, however, it's not fitting my needs.

I do like the sound, it's different, but ultimately not worth keeping.
