The tubes in the Lyr look very recessed and a nightmare to remove.

I've seen it on here that some people use masking tape...? How does that help? Do you guys mean duct tape, because the 'masking tape' in my country (UK) barely sticks to anything and I don't see how it would help...?

Has anyone broken a tube inside the amp trying to get the tubes out? That must suck, and it must be a fairly commonplace accident to happen with this amp!!

A related question: how long are you meant to 'warm up' the tubes before each listening session?

Hi,

I use a grey piece of foam that came in the Schiit tube box to grab onto the tubes. They come out in a couple of seconds, no problem.

I think the tubes need about ½ - 1 hour to sound their best. I'm usually too impatient, and start listening straight away hehe,

Yup I broke a tube when trying to remove one, when I owned a Lyr. Couldn't really believe it myself - it literally "imploded" under the pressure of my fingertips. Of course there were broken pieces of glass and filament that fell back inside the amp, so I had to open the amp to shake them out.

After Jason @ Schiit recommended using masking tape to me, I found the procedure much easier - I rolled a piece of tape around the top of a tube and pulled upwards gently.

Guys,

This little baby is indispensable: http://www.amazon.com/Electro-Harmonix-EH-Tube-Glove/dp/B000UMCLIC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1326010172&sr=8-1
or...you can use these to raise the tubes high enough to grab easily with your fingers: http://www.tubemonger.com/NOVIB_Socket_Saver_with_Vibration_Red_B9A_NOVAL_p/novib.htm

I have and use both.
Cheers!

Reviving this thread, as I had the same question tonight.

No need for fancy gadgets or tube extenders, guys.  Six inches of electrical tape worked perfectly.  Simply wrap around top of the tube and gently rock and lift.  Works like a charm!

Happy Rolling...
