New Hifiman Headphone HE-400 is out

At this rate, if I can even get them on I'll never touch them again.  I have no patience for this kind of stuff.

EDIT:  Yep, I must be a moron.  I'm about ready to throw these friggin things through the window in frustration.  You line two up and the other two are off center just enough that they won't go in, and then trying to twist it a little bit pops the first two out again.

I can't get em in either without a small slot screwdriver. Basically I line it up so the first two tabs get in, then I press those two inserted tabs down while pressing the third tab in with the slot screwdriver and pressing that side inward at the same time; same with the last tab.

Just find something that's flat and not sharp. Maybe even a credit card would work.

Just had a big haircut earlier today, wow 5000% improved comfort with the HE400s now. I feel like I can wear em for 10 hours straight with zero discomfort finally. Also music clarity is boosted significantly as I now have a better seal.

I ripped the plastic insert out so I can see what the hell I'm doing and I still can't get it in there.  Is it possible the things are faulty?  I don't see how it's possible to stretch plastic, and there is quite a bit of force required to do anything.

The plastic ring is quite bendable.  I don't really know what else to say.  If you're having this difficult a time with the Hifiman pads, I'm scared to see what you do with a pair of beyerdynamics or denons.

Bendable, yes.  Stretchable I don't see how unless you completely manhandle the headphones.

With two in place, that's where the third one lines up.  If I don't push the first two into place quite as far they are barely hanging on and then one pops out as I get the third in place.

I guess I'll try the screwdriver method.  Is this done with the drivers still attached to the headband or removed?

Why'd you separate the ring from the pad?  Put the pad back on the ring, then slide the ring/pad combination into the slot of the cup that accepts the tabs, then locate the other two tabs.  For each of the remaining tabs, push the pad in and then down, doing so will bend the plastic ring temporarily, but will not damage it.  The stretch comment was only talking about stretching the pleather material out as the ring gets bent-- the ring itself does not stretch.

Because I can't see what I'm doing with the pad in the way, I wanted to see for myself exactly what had to be done and see them go in.

It doesn't help that I have the world's worst lighting in this stupid house.

Oh, come on. We've all struggled with stupid crap like this until we've been around the block once or twice. Somebody should feel bad for me. I just scored 2TB of flac rips. They are sitting on my HD but because I have a stupid cold I can't hear a thing.

I really don't think I need another drawing, there's only one way they can go in and I understand what you're saying, my issue is the ring is smaller than what the ear part is and I would literally have to stretch the plastic to make three tabs go in.  Bending has nothing to do with what my issue is as far as I can tell.

This picture is with the first two tabs is as shallow as they can go without popping out.  Look how much I'd have to "pull" the third tab to even get it in the slot, much less lock in place.  By the time I do that, one of the others pop out.

Okay let me see if I can actually help.

1. The first two tabs are super easy. Just put the first one in, squeeze the outside a little and pop the second in. This will make the next two tougher as those tabs will now sit closer to the rim of the cup. If you pull/push too hard you'll dislodge a tab the you already have in. I just completed step one in three seconds.

2. Now grab where the third tab is located with your index finger and thumb with your thumb on the outer edge. Pull gently at a 45 degree angle and the third tab pops in. Just took me about 4 seconds.

3. Last tab...this one your had to just work a little in a very similar fashion to how I described in step two. Just turn the pad at the angle described above and "push up" until it pops in place. About 10 seconds for me to do this one.

Then I twist the whole pad in a circle to be sure that all pads are in.

gL!!

Bending has everything to do with it.  You bend the plastic ring convexly so it bows out and shortens the pad's effective diameter, therefor allowing the tabs to fit inside the slot.

In step 3, take your thumb and press up against the rib of the pads so that they bow out.  With your index finger, support the pad from the inside.  Once you've bent it enough to where it's short enough in diameter for the tabs to fit inside the ring, then press down with the other fingers to secure the tabs in place.  This process takes me a grand total of 20 secs per pad.
