Still not that bad. How many are we at? I think it's 5-6. Not bad.

Generally more serious stuff for the remainder of it. 1st episode is definitely not an indicator of how the rest of it's going to go.

We're actually just finished the first chapter. First chapter was a bit over 70 pages and the other chapters are roughly 40, if the rest of the anime follows this pace and my info 'bout AGK being 24 episodes we could quite easily cover a majority of the manga which would make sense since they sort of wrap up a conflict around chapter 45 or so.

The "humor" exists in the manga as well and personally I find it provides some nice comic relief to some of the more serious scenes and brightens up the mood a bit. I think the animation style is the main cause of the brightness that's drowning out the dark vibes of the anime. While the animation style isn't bad, I think it's too vibrant for an anime like AGK.

Agreed, the humor is nice to relieve some tension every once in awhile.

Kind of disappointing that there's only 2 chapters per month but I can't expect too much. I've been obsessive about this enough already though. 10 volumes in 1 day is a biiiit much.

I'll read Akame ga Kill: Zero tomorrow although the current style of it seems like it will generally be more comedic than the main series.

Ooo, cool to hear some of your backgrounds, I'm a programmer/intern atm so no time to constantly refresh this page haha. But if you want to learn a bit of programming I can help Hybrid (I'm doing dev at Microsoft atm)

Pretty sure Joker is monthly so that's 1 chapter per month unless my info is off. If it wasn't for the humor I think I would have considered this manga to be near Deadman Wonderland level.

Zero is a lot like the main series starts off nice and then pulls a 180. Its also got a bit of the psychological character development you'd expect from a backstory as well which makes it even more dark in some aspects. You'll see some characters from the main series as you go through Zero so I'd suggest reading the main series first then read Zero.

I'm also reading No Game No Life and Mahouka on Bakatsuki. I'm probably going to go through these a lot quicker then they translate but I'm hoping I'm wrong.

Did you like the programming and math classes to begin with (year 1) but now it's getting stale? I'm not sure how crazy your math classes go, we only ever go into control systems (calculus) and algorithms (logic) for our core classes.

I like programming because I get to do cool stuff that I'm personally interested in that's not classwork (but I'm also in a generalized discipline rather than specializing in medical comp. sci. like you are)

The programming stuff was alright. Math has always been one of my worst subject.
I get the shivers just by looking at this test....

  Episode 14 of Mahouka

New Soviet Union?.... I just got a freedum boehner here. It seems my boy Putin pulled it off in the world of Mahouka after all!

This show never stops giving, doesn't it?

Quite dark as well. It's more comedic more often as I expected but still resembles the main series quite well. Finished the current 8 chapters that were out already.

I should probably go read No Game No Life.

I love Rail Wars! reviews.

You know who might really like this show? Banba from Princess Jellyfish. Or maybe not, since it can't seem to decide if it wants to be a flat-out train otaku show or if it would rather reach a broader audience by throwing in anime staples like
A) man-hating girl who loves guns
B) clumsy busty girl
C)guy who eats a lot and is kind of dumb
D) blank slate nice guy hero
The basic premise of this infomercial disguised as entertainment is that high school students looking to join Japan Railway (JR) for work after graduation are offered the opportunity to see if they're suited for it through a work-study program. This entails a month of classes followed by practical training. Naoto (D) is one such aspiring railway worker. On his way to the first class he bumps into (A) Sakurai, who immediately denounces him as a pervert for a situation beyond his control and (B) Haruka, who causes it and blushes a lot. In class the three of them are thrust together, along with Iwaizumi, and they become a de facto team. We as viewers get to thrill at them shoveling coal into a steam engine, learn what the letters in front of a train name mean, and memorize the train schedules out of Tokyo Station as they pursue purse snatchers.
It's not so much that Rail Wars! is dull as it is such a blatant attempt to make a railway job appealing to the audience. It's like watching a recruitment video that someone tried to dress up, and while it does have its moments, they're so obviously trying to entice us that they fall a bit flat. There's also the issue of the fact that they are all calculated to appeal to specific viewers: random fanservice, thugs with knives who dribble in their evil glee, a girl who kicks butt, some attempts at humor...basically Rail Wars! looks like it cobbled together tropes from different genres and tried to make a go of it. If you really like trains, the JR, or are just hurting for shots of busty girls running while their breasts defy physics, it may be worth checking this out, but otherwise, you may as well just go turn on the TV at 3 am and let someone try and sell you a carpet cleaner.

Never. Tatsuya is way too OP though. His only real flaw is his lack of emotion.

My statement was highly tongue-in-cheek :|
I really really don't like the show and this Tatsuya bloke is one of the most unlikeable and annoying characters I know.

I get the unlikeable part as his setting might not be for anyone, but annoying? I actually find him ok compared to the standard clueless MC or passionate retards that's been the standard these days. At least he knows what he's doing

I should probably go read No Game No Life.

I'm currently juggling Mahouka and No Game No Life since NGNL only has one volume (after anime ends) translated so I want to savor it. May read volume 10 of Tokyo Ravens after then finish off the latest volume of Hanagai. I doubt Black Bullet translations will reach volume 5+ anytime soon so that isn't on my list.

He's broken beyond belief. I don't really mind it because he's kind of the crux of the story atm. Mahouka has fairly good storyline imo but there should be a limit to how broken a character is.

Is he though? We often see characters that start of weak, and follow him through the process of gaining strength. In this case howeve, the guy got his abilities through a mix of talent, training and something that happened in his childhood. He's OP, but only because the author threw us into the series where others would have started 200 chapters ago, and have 50 of those of his training, mentor, sweat and tears etc etc. Which to me, is getting pretty old.

Well it arrived some time when I wasn't in town and I wasn't expecting it since I didn't receive an e-mail with the tracking ID (even in my spam folder), and it came in a kind of sketchy USPS Priority Mail shipping box with no return address and my address hand-written with "uniquesku" written next to my address, but it has finally arrived nonetheless.

You don't know his natural ability do you? Genius (Tarus Silver) and martial arts skills aside he's still broken without that. The anime didn't go into it all that well:

He's a BS magician and his innate ability is to restore and destroy things. Remember in the beginning of the anime where he nukes a battleship? Also there was a part in the first opening which referenced when he healed Miyuki from a fatal injury (pretty sure it was fatal if memory serves). He's also got a command in place so that he automatically repairs himself if he takes too much damage (this was shown once in the anime after Miyuki KO'd him). All those are top secret abilities and why he was involved with the military.

Also the reason why he isn't accepted by his family is because his "magic" restores or destroys which isn't magic under the family's definition as it doesn't modify the state of something in existence or something along those lines.

The only reason why the author made him the perfect human being and the ultimate lady-magnet is so the reader can happily pretend to be him.
Wish-fullfilment blablabla.
They did not even try to give him a real personality because he doesn't need one.
