For tvrip most of the time I'd prefer 720p.
The encoder has to do very good job to encode high quality 1080p from 1080i, but normally it doesn't worth spending that much effort on tvrip as its only temporary thing before blu-ray release.
And I have my upscaler set up well in madvr.

Are you watching in fullscreen?

Of course!

My time spent watching in full screen is split half and half between a 23" 1080p and an 11.6" 1080p screen. Very rarely do I watch anime on my 5.5" 720p Note 2, but boy those colors sure are amazing!

No, and even when the shows over, and there's BD rip, it also will depends whether the studio really did redo the art (highly unlikely) or they will upscale with a few touch ups here and there (or rather filling up missing frames. I'm looking at you Shingeki no Kyojin).

I've never spent the time in comparing the TVrip and BDrip.

Missing frames? Any notable examples?

I used to get all my TVrips at 1080p, now I don't even bother with it and go straight for the 720p after some consideration.

As for encoders/subbers, I usually stick to Final8, Mazui, ANE, THORA, Hiryuu etc. Revo has some good multi-audio movies. Coalgirls always (and sometimes ANE) goes a bit overboard with the quality, nearly reaching 2 GB for some episodes!

It's really hard to appreciate the GUI until you've lost it.....
I just spent half a day learning how to configure my internet connection and manipulate files on my ubuntu server.......

Thought I could just plug in any USB drive and use it... but no....

Code:
sudo mkdir /media/myUsbDrive sudo vi /etc/fstab UUID=xxxxxxxxxxx /media/myUsbDrive exfat rw sudo mount -a

Why are you using exfat file system? :l

Lol, do you not have a GUI with your Ubuntu distro?

Started watching darker than black, and i enjoy it a lot!

This might be my new favourite anime.

Amazing soundtrack too! =)

This was one of my semi-starter anime. Specifically, the third one I watched after getting hooked.
It was my favorite of the ones I had seen for a while after watching it. I need to rewatch it to say if I still really like it after so much more awesomeness though. (and the sub version this time.... I still don't know how I could stand the dub acting when I started....)

Yup, that's how it works.
However, it's not really the GUI that auto-mounts drives.... :p

A BD rip is worlds better in quality than a TV rip. Sharper, less color banding, audio is almost always better, etc. If you plan to archive anything, as I had said before, you'll regret it 5 years down the line (when you have upgraded to a 30" monitor, or 4k catches on (debatable)) if you didn't get the very best quality version available.

The only caveat here is when the show is not that popular and a decent BD rip never makes it out there, but thiat has gotten pretty rare these days.

Seems pretty accurate to me~

Me too. NGE is one of those things where people seem to NEED it to have a deeper meaning. My personal belief is that the setting and plot devices in that show make little sense, and were never really meant to. It's all about Shinji and how emo he is. So all the theories out there are just people trying to make something out of nothing. If that show hadn't used biblical and other religious terms, then there would be no debate that that comic is 100% accurate lol.

I use ext4 on my USB hdd.

I believe ext4 is native filesystem to use in linux, might be bit faster too.

But then Windows / Mac systems can't see my USB thumb drive......

I'm using Ubuntu Server.

Trying to sound like a newbie here
