Driver design/shape

I've often wonderen about all these driver designs n' shapes.do these affect/influence sound at all?

For some reason i absolutely HATE the "hollow" shape (top on in the oh so fine paint picture) and the design that camebridge n'  B&W use.Why cant manufactures specify why they use the drivers they use?

And finally does someone know where i cant get some insight on this subject?

Thanks Alot!

The size, shape, material and location of a dustcap (or lack thereof) does change the sound generated by a driver. Depending on all those factors, they can especially affect a driver's performance in the upper mids and highs.

Presumably speaker manufacturers choose or design drivers with specific performance characteristics for the enclosures and crossovers they are using... they don't really need to specify - the sound signature is their answer to your question.

Look around at Madisound and see the variety of drivers available in a given size range (not counting bespoke/proprietary designs) - and you can see frequency and Q value charts for how similarly sized drivers peform with and with out whizzers, dustcaps, etc.

Already a good answherer-der.

I do know that there are differences in sound signiature in different speakers, but always felt like the cabinet/crossover/amp etc made MUCH more of a difference than the driverunit itself. The link U posted is indeed VERY helpfull very many thx.
