Hd 558 mod

Hi there has anyone tried modding the Hd 558? Is it worth it to mod while voiding the warranty? I know you can have a 555 mod to 595 but would it be the same for the 558?

I asked this in another thread and apparently you can't do the same with the 558 because they changed the material.

I have the 558s and have done the 555 foam mod on it - did it within a few hours of recieving them - so yeah bang goes the warranty. :D

 

i wouldnt go as far as changing the cable though - its just too smaller phone to be worthy of the cash output on it.

 

anywho back to the mod - very easy to do ...

since i did the mod - i have occasionally put the foam back in - but i just prefer the openess and the clarity that came after i removed the foam.

I also have a pair of 558's and have removed the foam strips. The difference is not enough to make them sound quite as good as the 598's ( I think you'd need to change the grille for that, if it's even possible), but it definitely helps to make them sound more open and improves the bass fairly dramatically, even though it doesn't sound quite as tight afterward. It seems ridiculous to me that Sennheiser would impair the performance of the 558's just to create a more noticeable difference between them and the 598's; So, I would definitely recommend performing the mod but be careful because the wires that run to the drivers are really thin and I was worried about breaking them.

If I'm not mistaken, the 558 and 598 have different drivers. Please someone correct me if I'm wrong here but the 555 to 595 only works because it's the same driver. The mod to the 558 won't make them a 598.

The HD-558 and HD-598 do use the same driver.
