IEMs and worsening tinnitus - correlation?
Dec 8, 2011 at 12:01 AM Post #31 of 63
I listen to my IEM's between play and next song if the Airplay logo is on my iPhone, crappy reference point I know but it is never uncomfortable to listen there.

BUT: My ears are still ringing from the David Guetta concert last night. Small packed venue with lots of speakers, really loud. Excision is going to destroy that same venue with his 100000 watts of sound. I'm scared.

I don't think I'll get tinnitus though, not anytime soon anyways. I'm fairly careful besides the occasional concert, unfortunately a lot of good artists are coming right across the boarder from where I live.

i went to a specialist.  they said nothing is wrong with my hearing and yet i hear a high pitched sound all the time. its worse when quiet or with iems/customs in of course. they really only had two suggestions but nothing to really help the issue.  less caffeine and more exercise. (im not fat but i did put on some extra poudns in the last few years. other than that, they had nothing to help my tinnitus.

There is such a thing as idiocratic tinnitus(or something of that sort) where there is nothing wrong with your hearing, yet it still produces the high pitched sound. Or it is atleast heard, so in otherwords its in your head.

I have tinnitus kinda bad unforrtunately.  It didnt used to be so bad, but i went out and shot a .45 pistol, with home defense rounds, with zero hearing protection, 3 times. Ever since i can constantly hear the ringing. The only way i dont is if i listen to music, and if the music is quiet i still hear it quite well. Word of warning, wear hearing protection, i regret shooting that gun almost every day.

Losing your hearing temporarily is part of the experience lol. I think loud car stereos could cause it as well. Honestly the system I got in my parts Explorer (because my dad wanted it) could probably cause it after long periods of listening at "party" levels. Listening to IEMs cranked or near cranked is a terrible idea though. Full sized as well. It doesn't matter if it doesn't distort, it's not healthy for you. If you care to hear every little nuance and detail for most of your life I suggest turning it down. I'm surprised some head fiers still crank the crap out of them. Loud speakers is one thing. Over 100dbs blasting directly in your ear is just not cool and it annoys those around you.

What I want to know... is if bass or treble is more harmful.

Not talking about snake territory like 50Hz.... I mean like... loud 400Hz pounding bass, versus 10kHz treble zinging.

yea, i wonder that as well because you lose hearing starting from the top, so it makes me think that its high pitched freq's that makes you lose your hearing, who knows, it couldnt even be that sweet sweet midrange

The thing that hurt my ears the most at Guetta was probably the slow swwwwwwsssshhhhhhh sound that a lot of house music uses. Like it wasn't all that painful but you could pretty much feel your own ear drum distorting from highs. I've been in cars that tickle the ear drum uncomfortably with lows but that was a whole different territory. It wasn't painful but it just felt terribly wrong, not that I cared at the time, to busy dancing

From my experience. I can listen to full sized headphones full blast out of my iphone without getting any temporary tinnitus but i can't listen through iems on higher then 75% without getting temporary tinnitus.

That's because it's harder for the iPhone to drive full sized cans. Most IEM's are cake to drive, especially the lower independence.

@kiteki, I completely agree with that. I haven't really blasted my music since back when I was like 11 rocking those horrible Apple buds

custom IEM's must be the worst then!

...however, I find with high sound quality gear you don't feel like blasting the volume as much, since you get the full effect at medium volume. :)

It's not about details it's about enjoyment. I get more enjoyment from loud music then quiet music. Regardless of how good the headphones are.

Y'all need to get the Teclast T51 with 32GB microSD x 2 and stop eating them apples.

Listen now, I'm 18 and broke. The iPhone is cool, it produces some pretty impressive sound especially with lossless files. Rather spend my money on a portable amp and IEMs than lug around two players without an amp.
