Q701 impressions thread

Maybe the quality of your power is fine, but I don't think UPSs generally solve mains quality problems.

Thing is, I don't believe I have an issue with the quality of my mains power. I do have two UPSes plugged in to the same AC outlet, but that by itself is not going to cause an issue. There are no electrical issues in my house, and incoming power is fine. Also, I think this line of discussion is a little bit beyond the scope of my original question.

There really isn't that much power coming out of it and I consider it's main use with iem's or efficient portables. I mainly use it with my customs.

I think I'm going to buy the Schiit Vali. I don't want to spend too much on a dynamic setup since I do have a nice headphone setup already.

I've never tried the Concero HP with the Q701, so I don't have any real knowledge, but just going by the specs, it looks like it has enough power, but who knows?

Depnds on what your mains quality problems are...and depends on the topology of the UPS.
Not all UPSs are created equal.

I'll find out soon enough. Either way I wouldn't be able to use my Concero HP for my PS3 so I do need to get an amp eventually. I've been toying with the idea of buying a HD800 again so might look into a different level of amping but I'll see in the next few weeks. I got some tough decisions to make :)

buddy it doesn't have the power to drive q701. From the official references Q701 requires 200mw at 72 Om, while your Concero HP Dac amp 6.3mm headphone jack can only provide 275mw at 32 Om. You will need a powerful amp with high current like SAC K1000(used to pair up with k701) or Burson Soloist SL.

Concero HP drives 206 mW into a 60 Ohm load.

BTW, 200 mW is the maximum power rating of the Q701, not the power required to drive them.

Do you guys think Little Dot MK III pre out to Schiit Magni is a good combo/idea. Schiit said not to worry about DC coupling due to it having a sort of servo.

After years of using my Denon PMA710AE as my AMP, I'm looking for a dedicated headphone AMP for my AKG Q701.

I want the following but I don't know if it's a logical choice.

- Headphone amp
- DAC (USB/Optical)
- Possibility to connect passive speakers

I already found a Schiit set or Teac 101 / 301.

The Pro-ject Head Box DS seems to be quite interesting too, no AMP for passive speakers though.
But that's not the most important part.

Thanks for the help!

I recommend looking into the Audio-GD NFB-15 (or NFB-11).  It covers everything on your list there and it sounds quite good with the Q701.

I did mention that I was planning on getting a headphone amp however I doubt the Q701 is hard to drive. It shouldn't take that much of an amp to drive them however I am leaning towards a decent tube amp. It should work in case I do decide to buy the HD800 again but that's not happening anytime soon.

I use them for music production and I don't EQ them at all. I figure if I can make my music sound good on the Q it'll sound good on anything!

I've used my Q701 with an iPod.
They're not hard to drive.

There was a time I've love to have agreed with you. But an amp does more than just drive headphones louder. Most internal amps have to make a lot of compromises while discrete amps have one purpose. The end result is better sound, often attributed to the new amp, when its often just the loss of those compromises.
Second, remember that speakers are not purely resistive loads. Even volume matched, an underpowered speaker will sound worse than a properly driven speaker.
